It depends on what kind of software do you want.
I prefer True Image, it isn't expensive and work well for me, also it has simple ui.
    Just in case look this:

Ok, you guys are suggesting hard drive cloning programs, not backup programs. Those are good for drive imaging, restoration.

Me, I like to install a second drive, then use a program to backup selected directories at set times. This save important work files, photos, music and whatever you define. If this is what you want to accomplish, Karens Replicator is free and works excellent:

I'm a True Image fan as many others.
And it is the drive cloning software as well as backup and imaging program. It is able to create incremental and differential backup of partitions and files\folders as well as hdd copying.

yep, True Image is oriented for that job exactly

As for backing up, it’s better to use all the kind of backup: full, incremental and differential. For example, when I backed up for the first time, I created full image backup. And now I perform incremental backup every month and differential backup – weekly. You may set the automatic backup scheduler if you want. Differential method allows me to save changes since the first full backup. So in order to restore you need only the full and the last differential archive. I also use incremental backup to save recent changes but regularly create a differential archive that fix my monthly changes.
I use the external HDD for backup. Besides, I keep the bootable DVD with the clean install Windows and all needed programs. I.e. I created Acronis bootable rescue DVD and saved the image of my C: partition there. So that I have one DVD with the C: drive backup archive which is bootable.

Could be wrong, but I believe ntbackup is part of xp pro. Though, something tells me, one can install it via xp home cd.
