It's an Emachine with a built in restore drive. Would that be safe to use if there was a possibility of malware? It seems like that should have been protected but I don't know for sure. Plus it would be the fastest way to reinstall windows and all the drivers unattended. All I'd need to do is backup user files.
It started off freezing right after getting to windows so I used msconfig to stop all the programs at startup and it would boot. I noticed it did not have drivers installed for the ATI video card after installing them it would no longer get past the welcome screen, just restart, same deal after removing the drivers. It is also running REALLY hot, but it is a Celeron. Not sure how to proceed with wasting too much time/money on it.

Just a quick update, I know that Celerons run hot but is 70C at idle too much. I would think so. And that is from inside the BIOS with the side of the case off and the fan running at 3800RPMs.

you could remove the cpu fan and reapply thermal paste to see if it lowers the temps.

That thought had occurred to me but I don't work with Intel often enough to know if it was running too hot. The new thermal paste, after cleaning off all of the old (way too much) helped alot. With the case back on and the fan speed throttled down to 2500 it is just 56. It hovered around 51 and 2200 with the case off but there is no place to add another case fan. Unfortunately it is still having issues loading windows which I'm assuming has something to do with the frequent restarts caused by the over heating. A clean install never hurts so I'll give that a go and see if everything is back to normal. Thanks.:major

It seems that the random restarts had corrupted the installation. It's now running cooler, quiter and much smoother. Thanks for the help! :major
