I suppose the best would most likely be considered a plextor. Of course a pioneer one is fine too and will most likely save you over a hundred dollars.

Basicly just buy one which has the features you want and it should work just fine. If you really want to have what is considered the best then buy a plextor. I'm warning you though, a plextor will cost a lot more and it doesn't actually come with more features, you'd basicly be paying for the name. Of course they do have a good product, I've never had a problem with them. But I've yet to really have a problem with any DVD burner.

Ok fine how about I rephrase the question. What is the best drive for the money that has lots of features. I really don't know much about DVD burners. I know i want dual layer but besides that i am lost. Like the differemt formats and stuff

Best, is sometimes a Matter of Opinion, guess what, most everyone has one!

Excellant Burners for the money, NEC, media friendly, meaning can use most any brand of media, but I reccomend using only preminum media.

    Check out NEC 3500's
Here is a NEC ND-3520A $59.99 free shipping too:

I have a earlier model 2510A 8x Dual Layer, it has been a flawless burner, burned over 300 dvd's, havent miss a beat!

Yes i realize everybody has there own opinion i am just looking for a good DVD burner to buy, umm you mention preminum media, and i was wonderiing what barands are preminum. Also a friend told me that nec burners are crap, why is he wrong, or is he right. Just wondering

  6. Coco

    Coco Sergeant Major

You're not going to get anywheres asking if the NEC burner is crap. Because it's entirely a matter of opinion, and any tech site you go you'll most likely have people on both sides.

To be perfectly honest I haven't had an real issues with any DVD burners on the market. Just find yourself a dual layer one at a reasonable price and buy it. They all work. Buying the cheapest one with the features you want most likely won't be a problem. Chances are whatever you pick comes with a warrenty, so even if you do have problems, you're covered. You really don't have to worry about which one to pick too much with DVD burners.

I can say I have a Nec that is Excellant!
Sometimes when someone thinks the hardware is bad, many times it is the Operator!
I dont Know your friend so I cant comment on him or whatever problems he had!

Tell me a Brand & model of any burner or any hardware for that matter, and I'll bet I can find someone who had a problem, on the same note, I bet I could find for the same device a person who swears by how good it is.....

I dont mean to rant, But you did Ask.

Preminum Media, Look for media containing AZO dye is one tip.
    Look for branded media.
I preferee for movie backup Verbatim Movie disk, which contains AZO dye, thier 4x media burns at 8x speeds on my NEC.
I buy lot of media here great prices, you can purchase Standard, Preminum, & Professional grade media:
    http://www.meritline.com/dvd-r-blank-media-1.html
In the standard grade, I like thier Great azo media.
Ritek (preminum) is another of my favorites.

Back too Burners, any major brand probably is fine.
Pick one out, then Google it and read about it, as far as reviews on burners, anyone can write a review, read the written by users.

    Good Luck

Ok so what is the difference between all the different types of media, like + and -, i know what the rw and r are but the plus and minus symbols are beyond me

  10. Coco

    Coco Sergeant Major

The plus and minus is just diffrent formats. One format is backed by diffrent people. It's sort of annoying. I'd suggest you just avoid it though. Buy a DVD burner which is + and - compatible. The vast majority of burners coming out now do both + and -.

There is also a third format, it's called DVD-RAM, but it's essentially lost. You don't see it much anymore. Most people who did use it swear it was the best one, but either way it seems to be gone.

Chances are any dual layer burner is also a dual format burner (+, -). So it really shouldn't be too much trouble. Then once you have the burner you'll never have to worry about if you need + or - media. Also just so you know, regardless of which format you use, any DVD drive can read it.

Always liked Lite-On price and quality. Check it out.

I agree, Lite-On products had always been very good price and performance wise. That said, even though pricier than most others, Plextor products are awesome as well.

sounds like someone is a lil lazy...why dont you do a search and read up on the differences and read some reviews.
the way you posted here asking and responding to questions, made me think you weren't doing your homework and just wanted quick easy answers.
sorta like, "friend said nec is crap...is he wrong or right? why?"...calm down killer...do a search seriously, read about it, im sure youll find the information you're looking for.

Im gonna say Sony because I'v never had a peice of sony hardware fail me whatever it was used in,they have always impressed,Iv only had 2 Sony dvd drives but they both work flawlessly and seem smaller than other drives, theirs my 2cents.

I would tend to agree with Major Attitude. None of the currently available drives would I rate as crap. Some are more media friendly than others. I currently have three, a HP, Memorex, and NEC DVD burners. The NEC is the pickiest of the three, as far as media goes, but given acceptable media, it performs perfectly! :)

something that was sent to me..

    Question:

I've finally outgrown storing my huge collection of digital
photos and MP3s on CD-R and am moving toward getting a DVD
burner. However, I am confused by all the DVD formats
available, making my buying decision difficult. Can someone
please explain to me in detail what the differences are
between them all, especially the new double-layer ones? Thank
    you!

    Answer:

DVD-R and DVD+R are different competing standards for recordable DVDs.
DVD-R is more compatible with older devices such as DVD-ROMs and DVD
players, but DVD+R is superior on a technical level. Both of them hold
    4.37GB (or thereabouts) per disc.

    Then there's DVD+R DL (dual-layer), which is a higher-capacity (and
significantly more expensive) version of the DVD+R spec. It holds
roughly 2 times the amount of data per disc--close to 9GB per disc.

Almost all DVD burners these days can do at least DVD+/-R and probably
DVD+/-RW (which are also different from the plain +/-R specs) as well.
So, it probably doesn't matter what media you buy so far as it being
+/-R. But it's a good idea to check your burner to see what disc types
it takes, just so you don't wind up with a bunch of useless discs

Because this is a SUPPORT FORM. Maybe you need to understand how message forums work before you speak. He wanted opinions from people he trusted, not some website review which almost always show some sort of bias. I can appreciate that, I would take the opinions of people here over any website review.

The purpose of responding is to help, not be rude or insulting. Maybe you had a bad day, I hope thats all this was.

thanks for all the replys, it really does help, unlike some people (Jak3y). And for your information I have read lots of reviews all of which are different, i just wanted some other peoples opinions. I just wanted to know a dvd burner that had good specs and performed well.

Awesome drive, good choice on the drive as I have Plextor PX-712A and it rocks!
BUT, bad choice on media imo. I had problems with Verbatim. Even the cheapo brand I got from Target store was better. What brands do I recommend? Ritek and Memorex. These are the ones I use and am very happy with. If you got a Wal-Mart nearby, they have the 8x Memorex DVD-R or DVD+R (30-pack spindle) for $18, check it out.

Second Verbatim comment and pretty much been sticking to Memorex. The generic ones scare me even more.

IMO ... I'd just go with a Mad Dog from compusa or Lite-On as they're the cheapest ... and I've never had any problems with either, except having to update the firmware, but you gotta do that with all brands so big whoop! ... I've had nothing but problems with my Plextor 712a ... but maybe I'm just unlucky, I don't know

I have a package of 48x Office Depot CD-R discs. Sure, somebody made them for Office Depot, but the packaging doesn't say who. No problem writing at full speed with them so far, and a test restore worked fine. (I use them for backup.)

Gotta a couple of last minute resources to hit... Check out http://www.videohelp.com/. there you can do a search on all burners and media. Verbatim is the RW of choice for me because of it's longevity. (if you are just learning to burn movies get a couple of RW's) I have used over 200 ridata dvd+8x's with only 2 coasters... And that is on, what seems to unaminamously be the worst DVD+/- writer....the Aopen duw 1600's. the only drive I have seen that seems to have an edge is the nec (26 min dual layer burn as compared to a 40 min average to all the rest at Tom'sHW...) Writers are a pretty even playing field... have fun testing which media works best for you

But the media we are talking about on this thread is for DVD burners so mainly DVD media. I had good luck with some unknowns from BestBuy and Target and even swapmeets but generally stick with the 2 brands I mention mainly due to the fact they work without any problems with all 3 DVD burners I use (BTC, NEC & Plextor). Verbatim CD medias is not too bad but their DVD media is kinda iffy. Again we are only stating our opinions and experiences, I always had a awesome experience with Lite-ON (owned 4 CD burners) and Plextors (2 CD Burners and 1 DVD burner) but apparently Pyrate didn't! This could be due to his system, the media he was using, the Drive's connection/configuration or simply he got a lemon?
I do not recommend connecting Burners to controller type cards, the only time I notice my Plextor has given me problem is when I used a ATA-66 (backwards compatible) PCI based IDE controller card. Again this could be due to the controller card or simply DVD burner not suitable for being connected that way, I didn't analyze into it any further.
I believe Criminal_Chris would have to experiment on his own with different media brands as he goes along... ;)

Ya when I was lookng at reviews the plextor seemed really good and they said it was reliable. I also read user reviews and people said it was good. And plus a new firmware came out that allows 6x burning for DL media. Of course that media is still really really expensive but it will come down eventually. Thats wierd that you guys are having problems with the verbatim media. I looked on some web sites and they are considered to be pretty good media. Whats bad about them if you don't mind me asking.

Hmm after reading some reviews at Videohelp.net i realized that lots of people really liked the drive or really hated it. It could have just beem the system or just a borked drive. i guess I will see what happens, but i have lots of faith. Also some people might not have had the updated firmware. Because i read that this drive had a terrible start, and once the new firmware came out the drive became a top notch drive

Ooops -- I should have mentioned that I was using those outsourced CD-R discs on a LiteOn 1633S dual-layer DVD burner. I bought that one largely on the basis of its reviews on sites like CDRInfo and CDRLabs.

So far, so good. But I did have to install Nero from my older CD-ROM drive -- the LiteOn wouldn't read one file. A firmware update fixed that, and significantly reduced error rates reading the Nero disk and an audio CD.
