OK have my 80gig hooked up as a slave to my 40gig at the moment and the 80gig was the master for pentium 3 which sadly died the other day. So I'd like to reformat the 80 gig but didn't want to use the basic format by right clicking it then choosing format, so is there any software which will let me do this?

i would use the setup disk that came with the drive. they usualy can format and partition the drive for you and can creat the wright type of partition type for the Os your running.

you could also use a windows 98 boot disk and when promted type the fallowing but A: :
    A: format C:\

this work fine unless you are using NT, Win 2000 or XP then you should convert the drive to NTFS or use the Os install cd to format the drive.

Mine didn't come with any discs, I just used the basic "right click then format" option which worked fine, thanks anyway for the input.

That's probably simple as it gets.

Most HDD manufactures have utility to format & partition (multiple partitions if ya wish) diagnostics etc they come with retail HDD on bootable cd, or if ya have OEM HDD, free download at Manufactures Web.
    Maxtor is "MaxBlast"
    WD is "Data LifeGuard Tools"

All true, but I wouldn't mind casting a vote for Partition Magic which incidentally can format, (pdq), as well. :)

Damn, I thought I felt a shill running right down my spine there;)

True but the programs for from the manufacuters webiste are free. you could also go to bootdisk.com and download the windows 98 oem bookdisk file and create a boot disk. that give you Fdisk for partistioning for free and will format and drive in fat32 for free.

you could use the OS instlalation disk that usualy allows youto format the drive.

Thanks ASUS for that info, all my hard drives at home are maxtors so I'll be getting MaxBlast put on.
I did look into Partition Magic but wasn't sure if it could format or not, I only knew that it could create multiple partitions.

Just want to add, the MaxBlast utility, you would use to format & partition before you install windows, for multiple partitions & custon file options use: Harddrive setup & advanced mode.
Or use to to format/Partition an secondary drive added to your system, it will recognize any maxtor HDD ATA or SATA HDD in your rig.

If windows is installed already, you can create additional partitions with Partition Magic.
