    Hi,

Just helping clean a friends laptop, that is sooooooooooo unbeleivably slow!

Anyway sorted it now, it's running Vista unfortunte for him,

    I have 2 questions:

1st what's the best FREE firewall that takes up very little system resource?

I'm running Sygate but don't think there is a Vista version

Also it's an Acer laptop and EVERY 15 seconds the screen powers down if there is no activity how do I disable this it's nothing to do with UAC I think it's a laptop setting????

    Thanks

    Hi

Vista's own firewall is fine ( but if they are not a safe surfer ) then try Comodo or Vista Firewall Control ( 32bit ) < there is a 64bit version available if they are using that Vista version >

As for Screen, its a battery power saving routine, but if they are on mains or wish to keep the monitor live, then Control Panel > System & Maintanence > Power Options > click the Change Plan Settings under the chosen Plan of theirs, and set the Display to Never or a time of their choosing > Save Changes

    Hi,

Thanks you were right about the power option thing, managed to figure it out.

I will try comodo, would you recommend disabling vista firewall when running this and also what is defender shall I kill this as I'm running AVG :)

Safe surfer you have got to be kidding I ran combofix on his machine and it found a LOT of stuff one of the programs was called hotporn.exe NO joke I wonder what that could have been :D

    Hi

Yes on the Vista in built firewall if running Comodo,

Defender is realtime antispyware scanning, and covers what AVG in being an antivirus could miss, best to leave alone, unless thinking of using another antispyware application, but Defender in being built in cannot be removed only disabled.

Well if thats the type of thing searched for or application they are downloading then no matter what security your going to install, its likely they will get infected again soon.
