What brand is it, if any? Different brands yeild different results with drivers, or at least they used to.

also using the 6800gt the problem with drivers now that every release includes alot of updates and driver fixes for games and the likes, you would have to read the readme for the release set you prefer and the one after it, to verify that whatever you play isnt being affected.

    wow,what a happy guy!6800gt,that's what i want!

enhh,i am using the gf 5900 and in my opinion,....66.93 may be the best and i have read about much of this one ...it offers the best effects in the hf2 and
    far cry....

last...i don't really think it has alot of effects of the board.....you can get more 2--5 points in the MARKS ..only...after you have setted for long long time...on the board...

i have used the 71.20.....the points i got ...came down alot....errrrrr

of course , i am using the gf 5X and you are the gf 6X..i don't resure that they are terrible the same.

Can you link us to this proof?

Not that i'm the remote bit interested in benchmarking scores these days, but I would like to read why newer is not always best, alot will depend on hardware used vs driver version used, what will work for others will not necassarily work for someone else.

Ooohhhh little bit of an attitude their, so you are psychic and have read my mind as to what I do and don't understand? ;)

and my answer is if you are baseing your proof on a forum post from 2003 then hardware and drivers have come along way since then.. I will re-itterate, each user will have various degrees of performance to others using same drivers if say 77.77 works for me and gives me a good benchmark/gaming performance then its not necassarily going to offer the same to someone else, equally if another driver works well for you its not necassarily going to work well for me. That is why many users settle on whats best for them, they try the newer ones out if they off no significant advantage then the will rollback to an older version but if the newer driver works then they will use that.

A blank statment that Newer drivers are not better is wrong as many variables exist... hardware plays a big part and older GFX cards may not like the newer drivers so yes performance may not be better than using a driver from around the year of that GFX cards release.

Alot of power users are finding 77.72 FW drivers are good and they are only a few months old... it may turn out that a future FW Driver offers better performance

you'd need chinese language support installed and yes baking an apple is most likely chinese, if they wish to post chinese on a predominently english speaking forum then great no-ones going to read it anyhow so its pointless!

but what language you understand or dont is irrelevent to this thread.

I have had a situation (not personal) where I was trying to run a game using the 77.x drivers, but found out that the 66.x drivers worked better. So, I uninstalled the 77.x drivers and installted the 66.x drivers and the older game worked flawlessly. BUT. Halo and and a few others had major rendering problems. Switch to the newer drivers and the newer games worked great but the older ones didn't.

I just want to clarify, this was not my personal computer, and the video card was a 6600gt.

So, my question is, what games are we talking about here? Old ones or new ones?

Exactly mate, just goes to show as you say, what drivers work best depends on many factors... :)

  19. biking an apple

    biking an apple Private E-2

oh, i started to know how the drivers worked....errrr..maybe....
but,as i have said,i have read about a report of some "STRONG" game s that comes out lately...for EX:HF2 and doom3...FarCry...

and but again..the drivers in it does not contain a 7X one,all of them are the 6X and 4X ones...oh, i have a 5900.so the best maybe the 6X ones....

it did sure that the 72.17 that i have tried didn't give me any surprise.when i use it..many games' frames get down ...not smoothly running.

is this right that the 7X offers better for the 6X00 Video cardS?

if so....i 'll prefer changing one...6600GT may be the nice choice.

Cool i also have a 5900 se and the best driver was 77.72 and i didn't see any difference when i changed to 77.77. (when i changed the driver to 77.72 it went 100+ 3dmarks for 3Dmark05) :)

A link to an older article I wrote...
    http://www.goldfishsbowl.co.uk/?p=15

This was some time ago, and done using my Ti4200. I never had the time to do the full investigation. From what I can see, newer drivers have (or at least had) different optimisations depending on trends in 3D applications at the time of release. Running a new benchmark with new drivers will have comparable results to an old benchmark with old drivers.

Also, some drivers support higher functions which older versions do not support. Disabling these functions (such as higher version shaders) will dramatically increace performance, since the card is doing less work. This does not mean the card works any faster in reality though!

However, its possible to disable Shaders in new drivers too. I've disabled 2.0 in my current driver set, because this card is complete crap and none of the games I have require 2.0. Along with other tweaks, I get both the performance of an older driver which doesn't support the new functions while ALSO getting the optimisations for the newer games which I run.

Similarly, if you have an older card, optimisations for that card/chipset will be phased out in favour of newer models to conserve disk space and improve stability / reliablity.

Anyway, thats what I've found since the last argument in this forum about old drivers :)
