    HI Guys

    OK I am looking to upgrade my CPU and to my disapointment my MOBO doesnt suport the new Intel Core 2 CPU's.

    It does however support the Pentium D range.

    I want to be able to overclock the CPU and I was wandering if anyone has any experience of the Pentium D range and in particular their ability to O/C.

    Any comments would be appreciated

    Cheers

    Most upgrades include mobo, CPU and RAM as suitable minimum requirements.

    I would be more tempted to upgrade my mobo to 'core 2' requirements along with my CPU and RAM as this combination will easily outperform any overclocked Pent.D range processor!
    With O/C'ing you may have to update your PSU and Cooling facilities also!

    This is a great thread on overclocking!

    HI Thank you for the response

    I too would be tempted to upgarde my MOBO & everything else. However I already have top end equipment -

    MOBO = Gigabyte Quad Royal Nforce 4 SLI x16
    http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/Awards/m...oductID=1957&ProductName=GA-8N-SLI Quad Royal

    MEM = 2GB (4x512) Crucial Balistix DDR2 PC6400 (DDR2 800)

    CPU = P4 630 800 fsb with HT tech (this is the weakest part of my rig)

    GPU = NVIDIA 7950 GX2

    PSU = OCZ gameXtreme 700W

    HDD = 300GB SATA2 which is my main storage & a 140GB IDE for backups

    As you can see my CPU needs an upgrade to keep it in line with the rest of the system, I only bought MOBO about 2 months before Core 2 CPU's came out and I am dissapointed that it will not support Core 2.

    Thing is I am reluctant to buy a new MOBO as this one wasnt cheap and I havent had it that long.

    Thanks for the link to the O/C guide - I have found this before and I think it rules.

    Thanks again for your response - any further comments on Pentium D would be grately appreciated

    wow thats one heck of a system there dude.

    since you want to overclock, the 805 would be your best bet; it can get up to 4.1ghz stable :eek: and its not uncommon.

    if you dont wanna get into water cooling as well, you should be able to still get a high OC with just air. At that speed it outperforms the FX-62. Crazy, huh?

    you might wanna talk to BoldEagle about this since he has the 805 and plans to OC it to the max too

    Thank very much for the link to toms hardware review - I had seen that before just couldn’t remember where.

    OK - Read a lot - what you think about this

    Pentium D 805 is clearly the best card for O/Cing in the Pentium D range due to it high multiplier. Thing is the 805 only has 1mb of L2 cache per core and starts off at a base FSB of 533 (133).
    You say below that if I don’t want to get water cooled I could get it to 3.6-3.8 with good stability using a zalmon fan.
    On page 5 of toms hardware review it says if I were to clock my CPU at 3.6 or 3.8 I would have an FSB of 180 & 190 respectively. As both my CPU & RAM run at 200 already with a 1:1 ratio if I did this I would get a higher clock speed but reduced FSB.

    SO

    I thought I may go down the Pentium D 950 or 945 route - both have a L2 cache of 2mb per core but they also both have a multiplier of 17 with a base FSB of 800 (200) both are also 3.4Ghz.

    I could O/C my FSB to 235 and I would get 3.9/4.0Ghz - and I reckon that would be a lot easier to do that that raise the Pentium D 805 from 133 to 200.

    + I will get all the other enhancements Intel have made to the D range since the 805 was released.

    What you guys reckon?

    I'd get a new MOBO and get Core 2 Duo, it whoops Pentium D's ass, for not much extra.

    1) new mobo=more money. core 2 mobos are VERY expensive.
    2) pentium d's are VERY cheap now and overclocking certain ones can get you very good performance for much less. Check the benchmarks of an overclocked pentium D vs an FX-62; its amazing

    Thats a nice mobo and I was going to buy it 6 months ago but got the P5WDH (Core Duo and Quad ready).

    Excellent points, the point Tom makes is the low FSB allowing for the OC of the 805D, which can be tweaked higher (better than playing with the multipliers).

    I have just recently put my system toghether and at stock (2.66GHz) got 5096 4 3DMark06.

    I suppose at the end of the day it will come down to a cost perspective btwn the CPU you use. Thing is if you do a google on the 805D it is not only Tom that has excellent articles on it's capabilities but many others!!! Do a goole on each CPU and see what tech refrences you can come across. Will be interested. I will push this (805D) this w/e and see what I can do.

    Here's my post on the 805D:
