Best place to purchase XP Pro OS key

    Hi,

Does anyone have a good source for purchasing XP Pro product keys? I currently have an original Full version with sp1 on it. I have found a number of sites that sell the license key only for an OEM version but not for a full version. I'm guessing an OEM key won't work for a full version.

Does anyone know what the difference is between the Full version and the Academic version? I do qualify but I don't want to get it if it's stripped down in some way.

All the answeres are at Microsoft, I have seen them discuss differences betwen OEM, upgrade full, and Academic and was not even looking for it.

The local computer store only has the full version with CD and manual for hundreds of dollars. They don't have the Key only or the upgrade version which is much cheaper. I'm not trying to get anything for free. I'm just trying to find it for the best price. Surely with so many experts in this forum that install XP on a ton of PC's someone should have a good source.

Purchasing a key isn't much cheaper than buying a license with a CD.

This is correct, for obvious reasons Product Keys aren't cheap. Sorry, you're 'prolly better just purchasing the full deal if you really want it.

As M.A. said - full info re:O.S. differences is found on M.S.'s site.

Please Please Please. I don't need any more people telling me to purchase the full deal. I posted this to find the cheapest way to get a key. If the cheapest way to get a key is to get a CD and the kitchen sink that's fine. If you have a source to get Key's please respond. If you don't have a source you are just creating spam for people.

    Please stick to the topic.

there is no differnce between the full version and academic version, except for the license stipulates that you must be a student or teacher to qualify for that price. The software is the same.
Also, look into microsofts House plan, it's like a mini site license that allows you to buy just keys cheaply. I forget the term that MS uses to call it. A google search should find it. If I recall MS wanted to make it so you ould just purchase a license pack similar to how an open license was. This was all set forth in MS licensing 6.0. See if you can't find something out about it there. you might also want to contact microsoft.

Everything everyone has said here is correct.

Don't call our information spam, unless you know for sure.

Here, find out for yourself how much it costs, and you will realize a CD + key makes more sense:

Go through th options and get to a live person to talk to them about it.

Thanks for the information. I have been on the phone with Microsoft (many people) for almost 2hrs now. No one I contacted has heard of a "House plan" .
Microsoft's price for a full version key is $269.00 you must have the full CD
Microsoft's price for an upgrade key is $199.00 You must have the upgrade CD
Microsoft's price for a small business 5 or more keys for an upgrade is $186.

at www.newegg.com they sell Microsoft Windows XP Pro Upgrade Version - Academic - RETAIL for $87 including shipping.

I'm guessing people on this forum don't purchase keys since no one seems to have a source.

    ...

I gave you a number to call.

Unless you buy keys in large volume, you will not get hardly any break on the price...

AFAIK other companies are not allowed to distribute or sell licenses.

I used to work at a shop that was able to sell Windows 2000 keys... I forget the name MS gave it, though.

I don't want to get into a shouting match with anyone, but $87 seemed too good to be true so I went to http://www.newegg.com to check it out. An advanced search http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduct.asp?submit=advance brought up the $87 version of XP Home Edition with sp1a
. The cheapest upgrade version without purchasing hardware from this company is $194.00.[XP Pro is $194.00 (Model#: E85-00087
    Item#: N82E16837102146).]

Docfxit, have you tried Ebay? (Just curious?)

EDIT AGAIN: Per your post, docfixit, I went back to newegg.com & searched using product code N82E16837116112. (I found it- great price!) I also went to Ebay to check out this information for myself. Apparently they sell XP Pro product keys! I can't vouch for the quality, but I would (and will in the future) give it a try. ;)

    Peace & take care,
    Gina

Thanks for checking ebay Gina. Don't waste your money. Every program they are selling on ebay can be downloaded for free off the internet. None of them work.
