I want to know what you experts think of for the best registry cleaners. I want to tidy up my registry with a good solid program. Please give me your best suggestions.

I use 2 reg cleaners on W98Se and each workd very well indeed
The freeware one which includes a lot of other tools and is certainly popular is jv16 Power tools.
The trialware version which I eventually bought is Reg Healer. - it impressed me enough to lay out the USD5 (from memory] which it cost me. In a comparison between the two on the jv16 web site each came up pretty well together so take your pick - i find that some things missed by one are picked up by the other
    Cheers

JV16 Power Tools all the way. I tried all the registry cleaners on the website and JV16 Powertools is definitely the best for anybody with it's simplicity for someone who is not very experienced, yet also JV16 Power Tools also has the ability to do advanced functions (delete entries related to certain applications, etc).

HI, This question comes up a lot but "best" is never defined.

I use JV16 and have for years and I am quite happy as it is safe.

Very occasionally I have run a different cleaner after it and it has found extra items.

But which do you want a cleaner that is safe or one that takes out every thing willy nilly.

I asked this yesterday on another forum. Peace Mal

    What's a registry?
    What does cleaning it do?

I use JV16 Powertools because it is quite safe and yet still gets many entries. When I tested the different Reg cleaners I first ran the cleaner, and noted how many entries it found. I then noted useful features, target user knowledge level, and the sorts. some programs like Microsoft Regclean wouldn't even tell me how many entries it found or exactly what entries it found. It just did it's thing then quit. Another program, I don't remember the name, was so advanced I was scared to run it at all. JV16 Powertools found the most entries by a pretty large margin (112 entries to other programs with an average of about 70-80).

I personally want a program that can do the basic reg clean, yet still gives me some helpful tools to manually delete entries. JV16 Power Tools can be used by anybody, ranging from the blonde who wonders where the "any" key, to the major geeks that drools when he starts to talk about computers, (an instructor on a video litterally almost drooled when talking about First Person Shooters!).

That's my ideal Registry Cleaner. A cleaner that is safe to use on any system, yet still finds a substantial amount of entries, requires no tinkering to get good results, and allows me to see what the program is actually doing. A cleaner that can be used by any level computer user.

    My A+ certification book says:

"The registry stores all the information about your PC, as well as information on all the hardware in the PC, network information, user preferences, file types, and virtually anything else you might run into with Windows 9.x"

What commonly happens is that programs that are uninstalled leave a few entries behind in the registry. Windows just ignores the useless entries since they don't point to anything, but then anytime Windows uses the registry it has to skip over the useless entries wasting precious CPU cycles. A registry cleaner simply goes into the registry cleaner and finds these useless entries and let's you delete them, thus reducing the size of your registry and not wasting those precious CPU cycles.

Registry cleaners are not perfect, and often come with a disclaimer because you can really F up your computer by deleting a neccessart entry for either Windows or a programs that does work. Good programs (including JV16) have a backup function enabling you to return the entries to the registry and restore the computer to working condition.

I use Toniarts Reg. Cleaner. It can be a bit overenthusiastic sometimes, but it's free.

I have used may reg cleaners over the years. But I don't bother. They do work and they have helped me but I once got infected by a nasty spyware when I tried one. I don't know which one caused it but I don't do that anymore. I recently used WinCleaner that my friend bought from a store and it seemed to do the job for me. I did notice that my computer started up faster. If you get a registry cleaner that is good, it should do something to help your computer run better then it did. That's just my opinion.

Most decent Registry cleaners colour code the entries they find.

Green are safe to remove. Red should only be removed if you are certain.

Regardless of which program you use, make sure it creates backups.

BTW, JV16 Powertools is shareware, not freeware (I find it's scanning engine slow).

If you don't want the extra features and just want a Registry cleaner, they also do RegSupreme.

RegSeeker is good and also free.

Registry Mechanic has a great interface, is very simple to use and very fast.
