I have Counter Spy and run it every night. It usually doesn't find anything. Today I downloaded Spyware Doctor and ran it and it found 84 infections, most of which I recognized as real threats. Unfortunately after it removed the threats and I tried to scedule regular scans it immediately said my subscription was expired and it would cost me $20 to renew it. My question is, is it really that good and worth the $20? Or is there another program out there that works as well and doesn't cost $20? I really don't think Counter Spy is doing the job. confused

For free spyware protection, I heartily recommend:
    Spyware Terminator: http://www.majorgeeks.com/Spyware_Terminator_d5242.html
SpyCatcher Express (free 'lite' version of SpyCatcher Pro): http://www.tenebril.com/consumer/spyware/spycatcher-express.php
The full version of SpyCatcher is about $30 (I think), but the free version works great. I've used both of the above apps for quite some time, and I'm very satisfied with the protection. You may want to look into Spyware Blaster (link: http://www.majorgeeks.com/SpywareBlaster_d2859.html) and maybe browse the whole AntiSpyware section here at Major Geeks. Spyware Blaster offers a different type of protection, and doesn't need to be running to protect; check it out! You can use it with all other antivirus/antispyware apps. A good firewall isn't a bad idea either (I like Sygate; Zone Alarm is popular)....

Re: Best spyware program? Someting went wrong!!!

Well I used a post I found by Chaslang and took his advice on what to use. I installed Spyware Blaster, Spyware Gaurd, AVG virus, AVG Spyware. I updated and ran Spyware guard but it didn't find anything. I guess because I had run Spyware Doctor earlier and it found/removed 84 infections. Only problem is...I can't change my browser setting!!! My homepage is supposed to be msn.com, but the page opens at Microsoft and won't let me change the settings. There is a highlighted message that says "some settings are managed by your system administator". So I clicked on the link and it opened a help page with the below page open..........
(Why won't Windows allow me to change a system setting?
If your computer is part of a network at an organization such as a school or a business, your organization's system administrator might have disabled or even removed certain settings by using Group Policy. Group Policy is a feature of Windows that lets system administrators manage users' access to Windows features. If you suspect that Group Policy is preventing you from changing a setting that you need to access, contact your system administrator.

For more information about Group Policy settings, visit the Microsoft TechNet (http://technet.microsoft.com) website.)

How do I find out what is causing this?

Actually, while searching all the settings in the newly installed programs...I found the problem. I apparently checked a box that disabled the browser settings page. My bad! I would like to know exactly what protection should be running on my pc. IE: 1 anti-virus, 1 firewall, 1 spyware progam, etc. I don't want to have too many things open and running possibly working against each other or causing other problems. Can anyone help me with this?
