That's like asking what is the best brand of car. Every one will have a different opinion.

As far as av protection, use Windows Defender which is included in Windows 10 and doesn't cause any performance hit on the computer. Don't pay for any av program. The one MS includes has gotten much better over the years.

You can look at malware protection. I use malwarebytes which offers 4 areas of protection: Web, Malware, Ransomware, and Exploit Protection.
We have four Windows 7 computers, three of which are used daily. We haven't have anything show up when a scheduled scan is run. (I've been using this since 2008).

Read reviews on different malware protection programs before you buy.

I've never used a VPN so I have no thoughts on that.

Yes I agree with Plodr. Built in antivirus is as good as any these days. I used to buy Symantec endpoint with good results, it was kind of pricey back in the day, not sure anymore. Malwarebytes is a great add-on to use with the built in antivirus, as Plodr stated. Buy it from link here on MG's to help support the site if you buy it, they deserve the support.

A vpn may encrypt or "hide" what you are doing and where you are at but once you put your personal information on a website it is at risk of being exposed one way or another.

Hackers or whatever you want to call them are not targeting you or me. The payoff is usually small compared to the time involved to go after individuals. Instead they are targeting website servers where thousands or even millions of identities are stored and stealing them all at once.

Keep your browser and antivirus updated and use common sense.
