    System: Windows 10 version 22H2
Laptop: HP 17-BY1053DX (purchsed Nov 2019)
Internal DVD player: HP DVDRW GUE1N DVD/CD-ROM drive

We borrow DVDs from the local library. With increasing frequency, some of the DVDs stop in the middle of the movie and we need to bypass a few minutes of the movie in order to see it to the end. My thinking is that after 3.5 years of use, maybe the DVD player needs to be cleaned. Does this make sense?

I am looking at cleaning discs such as "Best Buy essentials Laser Lens Cleaner" or "Maxell 190059 DVD-LC DVD Lens Cleaner". Is the use of these products the best & safest way to clean the laser lens of the laptop DVD player? Are there better products that you would recommend? Or perhaps better methods?

I see some recommendations online to use a cotton swab and alcohol. I don't think this is a good idea as this can leave behind tiny cotton particles that may be difficult to remove.

    Any other recommendations?

    Thank you.

Alcohol and a swab works, those cleaning CDs usually just have a small 'brush' on the bottom of the disks that cleans the laser.
Have you considered that your getting scratched/abused DVDs from the library and that might be the issue? Might look into 'repairing' scratched disks...I recall there was a compound you could buff the disks with. Don't quote me but I think you could even use toothpaste.

Not really. I think the abuse done to the DVDs that you borrow is probably more likely.

If you have any commercial DVDs, try them. Also if you have a DVD stand alone player. try the borrowed one in there. Either of those ought to show it is the borrowed DVD and not your player.

Yes, you can clean a DVD with toothpaste. Do NOT rub in a circle!!! You rub from the center ring to the outside edge in a straight line.
