better driver for HP/esys Deskjet 3920?

Hi, can anyone tell this relative newbie how to install a driver for the above printer on XP Pro SP2 without using the manufacturer's installation CD?

The CD takes about 10 days to install their very bloated and intrusive software (which can also be downloaded and is about 45Mb). I just want to print from the printer without all the other flash gimmicks and whistles and low-ink reminders at start-up etc. I tried to 'Add a printer' using the Control Panel in Windows and chose HP Deskjet but, well, it didn't work. I know it can be done because a user review on ebuyer which also criticised the software hinted so, but I can no longer find the review. I'm hoping this is a common gripe for printers these days and someone has a solution they can share.
