Big Boo-Boo

I'm pretty sure this is a software problem. I've been having issues with "wuauclt" errors, so after some googling I renamed the file "wuauclt.old" and deleted other files. After this I began to run into problems. I had updated all of my virus protection programs and was about to run them in safe mode but I seem to be unable to start in safe mode. I am also unable to run msconfig.

I have tried system restore, but it does not seem to finish. I can select the date, and click next, but nothing happens.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

The error message I get from MSConfig is:
"This applilcation has failed to start because MFC42u.DLL was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem.

When running chkdks, I get the following message in the verifying indexes:
"Deleting entry...mfc71u.dll, mfcsubs.dll, mgmtapil.dll, miglibnt.dll, miglibnt.dll, migpwd.dll, mimefilt.dll, mlang.dat, m11_hp.dll, m11_mtf.dll, m11_pic.dll, mmdrv.dll, deleting entry sunprotectionserver.exe-2133CA02..." and several others. When running a second time, I get the same message.

When I run SpybotSD, I get several error messages:
"The file or directory C\WINDOWS\system32\migpwd.exe is corrupt and unreadable. Please run the Chkdsk utility." "...\mlang.dat..." "...\migpwd.exe..."


Does anyone know anything about this problem? I'm not sure where to even start.

 

I ran dial-a-fix, it found many errors, but could not fix them all.

I have also downloaded the new dll, and extracted it but now am getting the error

"The application of DLL C:\WINDOWS\system\MFC42u.DLL is not a valid Windows image. Please check this against yoru installation diskette."

Ugh.

I think that the wuauclt.exe problem is fixed.

It is in C:\WINDOWS\System32 and is 121 KB (124,184 bytes)
that is one of the known extensions

"File wuauclt.exe is located in the folder C:\Windows\System32. Known file sizes on Windows XP are 124184 bytes (77% of all occurrence)....wuauclt.exe is a Windows system file. The file is certified by a trustworthy company. wuauclt.exe is a trustworthy file from Microsoft. The program has no visible window. Therefore the technical security rating is 4% dangerous.

Is there another scan I can run that would make it easier to see what's wrong at this point?

 

I ran a registry scan (I think that's the problem)

the results were:

39 errors in path file reference
549 empty registry item errors
17 program shortcut errors

None of the scans seem to fix these errors.
