OKay, so My current computer used to belong to my Parents, and when I got it they had screwed it up soo bad by installing spyware and junkware programs that I couldn't even get it to work enough to uninstall all the crap they had on it, so I had to reinstall XP and wipe the hard drives to get it functioning. When I did this it caused a bunch of Driver problems, most of which I have resolved thanks to Driver Doctor. The Big one that Driver Doctor can't fix is that I have a DVD Burner on here, but it only works as a CD Burner. It doesn't show up as there being a problem in the device manager, and I have uninstalled the Driver and reset my computer a few times, and everytime it reloads the CD-Rom driver instead of a DVD-RW Driver. Does anyone know how to fix this? The Model is HL-DT-ST DVDRRW GCA-4164B. Also, I can't roll back to the previous driver, because the CD-rom Driver is the only one that it has registered.

    Greetings, Isaac3825776Good, and welcome aboard.

We need some more info from you: what's the make and model # of your machine (please include any Service Tag #s)?

Also, please download and run Speccy, a free system information tool.

When the scan completes, click 'File', 'Save as Text file', name the report, and save to an easily found location, such as your Desktop.

Be advised: the report will display your IP Address and Windows Product Key. You may delete this information if you so wish.

Then attach that file to your next post per these instructions: HOW TO: Attach Items To Your Post.

Bear in mind that the possibility exists that the optical drive can function as a CD burner but not as a DVD burner - different lasers are used for the two functions.

Also, what software are you using to try to burn DVDs? And, have you tried a different brand of DVD media?

    Hi

That is normally correct in Device Manager, just an old legacy thing in Windows, mine shows up as a CdRom Device (admittedly in later Win versions it shows the full name of the device)

But try using a CD/DVD burning application on a DVDRW disk and see if you can burn data, if you get errors burning a DVD disk, let us know what they are as it may just be as simple as deleting the Upper and Lower filters as mentioned HERE
