hey guys, i went to open my case on my dell machine, and when i opened it i was suprised to see a huge fan looking thing in the case over my processor. i guess that really keeps the temp down, i was just suprised to see it, i expected to see a normal ole heat sink, but boom, there is a huge fan looking thing. just thought i would see if this was standard equip.

Dell uses a technique to both cool the CPU and draw air thru the case to cool heat-generating components like hard drives. The fan/shroud-over-heatsink combo is efficient, quiet, and works well.

Dell does this to reduce the amount of fans in their computers, it act's as an exhaust.
Your case will either have 1 cpu fan, drawing fresh air from the back of your computer (wich is kinda stupid because the PSU fan blows out hot air at the rear) so your CPU fan blows 'fresh' cold air onto the heatsink, or as an exhaust - blowing the hot air from your CPU Heatsink out the rear of the case. Which reduces the temperature in the actual case, and cooling your CPU more effectivly =)

hey sry to steal ur post but i got a same thing goin in my case
a huge fan in the back of my case with a plastic mount that hovers over the cpu
my problem is that im gonna upgrade my mobo and i wont be able to use the plastic mount b/c im guessin it wont fit in my new mobo
plus i probably will be overclocking and i need more cooling
any advice on cooling? i was considering gettin a copper hsf with arctic paste
is the paste worth the money?

It doesn't make THAT big of a difference, but it's wiser to get the more expensive stuff as it's more reliable.
There will probably be people disagreeing with me, but the difference is minute - the noticeable difference would be how long the paste lasts.

Were you getting a new CPU aswell as a Motherboard? If so what were you planning on getting?
