DVD/Rom trying to read a music disk and got stuck so took it out and activity light still going so closed and restarted. Would not boot fully so chose ''last Known good Configuration'' this then reboots into more problems. This is the following messages.. 'CMOS Check sum Error -defaults Loaded' then reboot and 'C:\WINDOWS\System32\Nvcp.dll Install fail' then 'NV unable to start E-Mail scan' SATA RAID box with an ! and when it is loaded (if you can call it that) i am in Lowest 4 Bit Screen resolution. like being in Safe Mode. Have tried reset Cmos/Reseated memory/ but am at a loss. Failing ''Repair'' any suggestions would be welcome. Cant use Syst restore as have Reset Cmos..

Since this issue seemed to start with the DVD-rom, lets unplug the cable to the DVD and try booting.

Tried that Krazy took both the ribbon and power out of Rom but no change. Everything does laod eventually but very slow, now I never mentioned that earlier in the day, well an hour before this problem I installed Acronis HD cloner and started to clone (image) Hd but when I saw time invovled I halted/stopped correctly 30 seconds in, I have looked to Restore Image but the folder that I had named to empty HD has disappeared. It was later that the ROM problem occured and that was first reboot since running acronis. Correct me if I'm wrong but in the doing so it would only make a copy not anihilate a driver or two ???
Ran chkdsk and found 3 faults and restored and have run it since several times and A ok. tried updating all drivers and all seem to be correct, so am at a loss again.. :-( thanks for quick reply by the way.

That might depend on where the copies were created. Might they have overwritten something?

Is there a possibility that a driver had been written to the faulty sectors that CHKDSK found and marked out?

BTW -- suggest that you re-run CHKDSK frequently for a while. Modern IDE drives use sector sparing, so you don't normally see bad sectors. They can be the first sign of more serious trouble.

Did you ever figure out what stepped on your CMOS to generate a checksum error? It does suggest that a BIOS setting (or two or more) got corrupted somehow. You might want to take a look at your BIOS settings to be sure that they are still what they ought to be.

The error message "...defaults loaded" suggests that your BIOS loaded the default settings when it discovered a corruption somewhere in the stored settings. (Maybe a bit got flipped by a passing cosmic ray? It happens, but rarely...) Those default settings may be far less than optimal for your machine.

Hi Krazy/Zulu/Rob Ummmm.. I have just tried to boot and no recogntion of HD's so me thinks that maybe Bios settings are at fault as suggested, but first as HD's no showing so I looked to check connections power lead and ribbon and me thinks that seeing that the HD's are not be recognised I'll disconnect and alter boot to RAID as have a OS on there and lo and behold it has now booted correctly  On reboot I went to alter from SATA but it had already done so ??, have now checked CMOS and I have noticed that the clock/Time h:m:s are reverting back to Jan 1st 00:00:00 2004 each boot. I alter to correct timing but each boot it is reverting back the above. Now I have just noticed that if I reboot the clock will stay at correct timing but if I power off completly (pull lead from power source, wall socket) it then reverts back to jan 1st. (battery maybe) and also this is when the check some error occurs when booting. I've tried loading 'Fail safe'' and ''Optimized'' still no change, Checked all CMOS settings and only conflicting setting from the manual is in ''Advanced Chipets Set.'' the AGP Aperture size is 64M and manual says 32M. CPU temperature a little higher 4 C .. when it does fully boot all progs working normally except Trojan Scanner and AV. hope this makes sense as have been typing each progress as I go..

Heres another update guys, I booted up in Safe Mode as I hadn't run chkdsk from there and the screen resolution in there is ok like it was on a normal boot, its in medium (16 bit) not the hazy out of focus safe Mode screen. Also I did manage to run an AV but unable to see what outcome was as monitor went down half way through scan, Total black out. Have now put another on. Incidentally chkdsk found no errors. Looks like it is pointing toward the ''Repair'' its not so much the driver instalation thats putting me off its the effing log on screen that appears on a Repair that does me head in, cannot just boot up and walk away to make coffee as have to hang around to ok the user.. thanks again guys for your input. But will wait for further suggestions before i do the repair. :)

If this is any assistance, using another monitor I ran the AV again and the same happened, it Blacked out and no shaking of mouse would restore the vision. As a thought when i used/halted/stopped the acronis HD Image copier could it have returned a driver in the wrong place ??
