I installed a new printer last night. This morning computer would not turn on. I got as far as the page where I had a choice of:
    A) Repair (recommended)
    B) Normal

I have Windows 7 ultimate for an OS.

I chose repair, it started and 5 seconds later, shut down. It did this about 8 times before I finally completely turned off the printer and I restored the computer. It does NOT like this printer. I ran Super Anti Spyware on Friday, I had 4 threats, which is about what I have on a weekly basis. Just ran it again in safe mode (where I am right now). An hour ago it found 438. Does anyone have an opinion on whether the CD from Canon may be bad or not? I would appreciate help if possible. Thanks!

Are the threats you are getting Tracking Cookies ?? Also, are you sure the printer is compatible with your version of Windows and your computer ?? I know this sounds like dumb questions but it helps to know.

In addition to Nick T's questions, what type of Canon printer do you have? How are you connecting to the Canon printer, is it Wi-fi, USB cable or something else?

I am sorry it so long to respond. I tried right after your post to respond. My computer crashed. It is a PIXMA MG 6220. As far as I can tell, it is compatible.
I spoke to folks at Canon, the ones based in Virginia (they said) and I should not be having problems. I am very careful about clicking or downloading anything. This is the first download In more than 7 months. Any assistance will be appreciated. I am in safe mode right now. The only options I have had are "Repair" or "Normal". After running "Repair" 12-15 times I finally get the safe mode option. Thanks for any assistance.

Sorry, folks, it is a wireless printer. 21 inches from the router. I do not know if it matters.

Silly question, but did you run the software before connecting the printer?

Or, are you simply hooking it up, letting Windows install a driver and not using the Canon software suite?

I ran the software as I was hooking up. It did complete first. I do not know if this helps or not. I am afraid to use this thing...even in safe mode. I have Microsoft Essentials and Super Anti Spy Ware for protection. Is this enough? If I am wrong, please steer me in the proper direction. Again, thanks!

I would suggest that you use the system restore to restore the system to the time before you installed the printer driver and start again. Microsoft have provided some instructions here: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/products/features/system-restore

Did the printer come with a "Setup Software & User's Guide CD-ROM"? What happens if you attempted to install from the CD?

If you need to find the appropriate software for your version of Windows 7 then the Canon MG6220 printer drivers and software can be found here at the Canon website: http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/suppo...xma_mg_series/pixma_mg6220#DriversAndSoftware

Make sure you choose the correct Windows 7 driver, that is 32-bit or 64-bit.

Try uninstalling the software completely from Safe Mode, and simply connect the printer before booting (power on) and W7 will install just the driver for basic functionality. That way we can rule out the printer (hardware), and determine if this could be software related.

As far as anti-virus I swear by AVG Free, but that's just personal preference from experience.

I have done system restore 6 times today. I am very frustrated. As far as uninstalling the printer, my computer does not even find it. It is just not there. Does anyone have any ideas?

Did you try hooking up the printer, then booting without using the software CD?

If that doesn't work, I'd return the printer.

Thank you all for your help. There is not an option to return the printer. I bought it in November and just tried to install it. It is way past any warrant.

Again, thanks. I guess I will never buy a Canon again. This is just too much grief for a printer. I will be shopping for anything BUT a Canon.

    Thanks, all.

To all who responded...thank you! I completely uninstalled and re-installed without the CD. It is all working well. I hope it stays that way.

    Again, thanks and Happy Easter!

Let me just suggest a couple of things.
First, I had that printer and it was not a good experience.
Secondly, go to Canon's website and see if you can download the full program by giving your printers name, model pc's OS etc.
When you find your driver, printer package, download it as a whole -maybe 200 MB.
This will by pass the disc and install the program compatible with Win 7.
