Big Trouble W/pc - Help

Hi,
I'm a novice, but trying to help a friend. Here are the symptoms:

hard drive lite on
power button lite on
CD lite on
fan to power supply spinning
small fan on motherboard not spinning
no video or audio
no BIOS startup or BIOS detection beeps

I've done a BIOS reset and no change.
The above problem began suddenly - no new installations of any kind.

Do you think we're talking a bad psu or motherboard? Any assistance you can give is appreciated. Thanks!!!!

The person I'm helping didn't give me the specs, but I can tell you that this PC is a Compaq Presario 5000 Intel. If there's somewhere on the mb that I can look for identification, tell me and I'll do so. I have the case opened and when I look inside, I see a fan (Foxconn) sitting on the green board (mb?)measuring approx. 2 x 2. When I researched the name on the Internet, it said it was a CPU cooling fan. The only other fan in this case is encased in another box which appears to be the psu fan. I know I'm not much help to you, but I'm willing to look harder if you tell me where. Also, when you reference mb, what exactly are you talking about? When I say mb I mean the entire (green) board that houses transitors, memory, etc. in the pc. Maybe I'm using the wrong terminology. Thanks for helping.

 

I have an old Compaq 5800, The mobo has an Intel 810 graphics chip and Essolo sound built in.

I think you get a warning when the BIOS battery goes bad, but you may want to check that. Also double check your BIOS jumpers, I once had a jumper fall off and lay at the bottom of my case causing a similar situation to yours. And just to be sure that it isn't a monitor problem, and BIOS is actually initiating, check to see if any lights flash on your keyboard when you hit the power button.
