Bios Chip ????

    Hello to all...
    <- Noob here..
    thanks in advance for dealing with my lack of a brain when it comes to this stuff .. here goes..
    I recieved a laptop from a friend its about 2 years old..
    Its a HP 5135

    looks to be in decent condition.. i got it for free because it needs a bios chip..
    now exactly what that is , i dont know but i cant even power it on..
    Can i bring it to a place like BEST BUY and have the geek swuad just replace the chip , or must i replace the whole motherboard... /?
    what exactly does a BIOS CHIP do anyway ???
