Hi everyone. i have a compaq presario 5000 that i bought around 4 years ago. I have never had problems with it until last week. Someone was vaccuming around it (im sure that is not the problem). I tried starting it up and all it would show was the compaq boot up screen like this

i then i thought it was a video card problem. i went and bought one. When i did that, nothing changed. So i thought, if i cant even go to the BIOS, the mobo could have been fried. But the hard drive could have got corrupted aswell. I was grounded the entire time, so you can rule that out. Now, i need help trying to figure out between a BIOS or hard drive issue? any help anyone? all will be gladly aprreciated. thanks

If it was a hard drive issue you would still be able to get into the bios. I take it that you aren't able to get into the bios?

How do you reset the CMOS?

If you have the manual on your board, it's usually a jumper that you change positions on for a few seconds and then change it back to normal, with the pc turned off and power disconnected. On mine, I also disconnect the ATX power connector. Boot into the bios (hopefully) and select default settings and save. You would then reboot and configure your bios to your liking. An other method is to remove the battery for a minute and re-install it then do as above for the bios. Google it. There's plenty of info on how to do it. That may get you back into the bios.

Well to me this situation is an Ideal " No Post " Senario. Even after reseating the CMOS if it does not work then i would recomend you to follow these steps in the Order

    1) Disconnect all external Peripherals One By One ( Except the Monitor ) and then check.

    2) Still Nogo, Then Disconnect all the PCI Cards and chk,

    3) Still Nogo, Then Reseat the Memmory Modules and chk, If you have two Modules then Try with One and see if it Completes POST and then BOOTS. Remove both Memory Modules and switch on the comp and chk if you atleast hear some kind of beeps. If not then could be a bad MOBO.

    4) If Still You dont find luck. Reseat the Heat Sink, and Cooling Assembly.
    6) Still Nogo, Reseat Processor ( Be carefull when you reseat Processor since you might end breaking the pins ).
