I have a Toshiba Qosmio X505-Q882 which has now spontaneously put a BIOS password. No idea on what it is. I have done a lot of research on the issues (of course a good deal of information regards to laptops from 95-02)

I have taken this beast apart and removed the CMOS battery, left it out for over an hour. I havent found any information regarding a password reset jumper or anything like that. The only other thing I have come across is a key sequence used to display a challenge code where another code can be entered which would remove the password, but nothing specificly for this laptop.

I have talked to Toshiba which has been uncooperative, telling me to send the laptop in. I am in a situation where I cannot send the laptop in, so anyone with any knowledge on these new laptops with thier Fort Knox BIOS would be great!

Do you get a quick flash of the Toshiba screen then a black screen with password: ?

yep, goes through the POST and then prompts for the password...

it is a pheonix bios, when attempting to access the bios by pressing F2 it shows "Pheonix SecureCore(tm) Setup Utility" and still prompts for the password. Taking the CMOS battery out did reset the clock and settings, just not the password.

Owing yo missuse, password cracking is a difficult subject.
Over the years, no doubt , like yourself, I have dabbled just for my own ego- but, with later laptops, especially, its not that easy- Here you can see the problem-

    LAPTOP AND NOTEBOOK RECOVERY

Most laptop manufacturers have provided additional safeguards for their computers. We are not aware of any simple BIOS recovery program that works on laptops, nor are we aware of any simple backdoor passwords for these machines. BIOS passwords in most laptops are stored in a special chip on the motherboard and the only way to bypass this password is to replace this laptop security chip. Laptop BIOS passwords cannot be bypassed or reset by removing or shorting the CMOS battery. Further, doing this may cause other system errors and complicate the recovery or your system.

For the newest Toshiba laptop or notebook models we do not have a solution.

Each Toshiba model is supported by only one solution and each solution only works on the models it supports. These solutions are not interchangeable.

well that's a bummer, but definitely good to know. Looks like these folks will have to send it back to Toshiba under warranty. Although Toshiba is telling them that it's not covered under warranty because they're saying they put the password on there, which they're saying they did not. I did, while researching, find one other instance where the BIOS password appeared out of the blue after shutting the system down.

    Thanks for the info :)

    Update-
I just had to get into a Bios on a Toshiba l450, and after a lot of experimenting-
It is down to you if all goes pear shape-
Under the ram, if you can find a little u shaped emblem with a T inside it (best way to describe it)
Get a paper clip, and bend it to a long U shape.
    Remove the ram cover
    remove the ram
    Remove the battery
    Disconnect any power lead.
Now hold down the start button for , say, 20 seconds.
This drains residual power from the board.
Touch the U part of that little emblen, with one side of your paperclip.
Now, on the L450, I touched the other end of the paperclip to the heatsink !
Hold it steady for 30 to 40 seconds , and then remove.
    Put everything back....................
If you get a blank screen like others do, sometimes , then do the same again.
Don't forget--at your own risk, but it just worked for me.
You can see the shape on this link
