I'm trying to downgrade my Vista back to XP. When I insert my install disk to reformat my hard drive the computer won't boot from disk. I know that it is the boot order in BIOS. When I restart my computer and press the prompted key to enter BIOS Setup (Delete) the screen goes black as if my computer is asleep. If I don't push anything, then the computer boots up into Vista no problem. There are no other problems with my computer, everything runs great. What can I do to fix this?

You need shut the pc right down not restart and start tapping the del key as soon as you power on.

It does the same thing when I turn it on fresh as it does when I restart. Is there a way to fix this?

Just to double-check, this is a full copy of XP and not a restore/recovery disk that you got with another computer?

It is a full copy of XP. The problem however is that when the computer starts up and I press delete to enter BIOS setup the computer goes to a black screen and the power light on the monitor flashes on and off as if the computer is asleep.

In other words, you can't get into the BIOS. What make and model is the computer?

Thanks for all your help! The problem just randomly fixed itself today. I don't know what I did, but when I turned on the computer this morning everything was back to normal.

Now is a very good time to establish a backup strategy.

I am rebuilding an old Abit KR7A and am experiancing a simular problem as this guys. The differance being that I can get into bios from a cold start, but after making changes, I get the no post (black screen, no beep, flashing monitor signal). If i cold boot it, I get "cmos checksum error. press f1 to continue or del to enter". I have switched memory, and mobo battery. Any other ideas?
    Thanks
