Is there a way I can get a BIOS update for my computer without having to pay $59.95?

    Thanks,

Are you talking about updating an existing, working BIOS, or replacing a damaged chip?

    Flashing an existing, working BIOS.

The motherboard manufacturer should have on their site the latest updates.

There are some companies that "rework" existing Bioses and offer them for sale, and although I've never used them, I would only trust flashing the Bios by using the manufacturer's flash.

Thanks for your help so far. I'm including the link of the site where I need to download my upgraded BIOS. The only problem is I'm not sure which one to select. Moreover, it says that I should flash my BIOS on a clean system only--what does that mean? Second, is this something that I should be doing, or is it a risky process to upgrade my BIOS? I mean obviously there are updates available, but is there any reason I shouldn't. I'm hoping this will fix my clean install keyboard problem.

    Thanks,
    James

As mentioned by insomniac, the latest updates will be on the MB manufacturer's site, along with detailed instruction on how to do it. Some MBs such as MSI and Asus allow you to update the BIOS from Windows, which is the only way I have done it.

It would make sense to use the latest version if you are going to upgrade. I downloaded the one at the top of the list and it seems to load it self onto a floppy when you open it, with instuctions. There is always a risk when flashing a BIOS ( bad floppy, power failure), so you would do so at your own risk. The one question I have is why do you think it will help you with your problem?

James, you only ever flash a Bios when it specifically addresses the problem you are having.

In your case, it seems to be the keyboard, so if it doesn't mention keyboard compatibility, there is no use flashing it.
