How can I check to see if my BIOS needs updating, and where do I go to get any update?

What motherboard are you using? Or do you know what bios you are running on at the moment.

Once we know that it pretty straight forward.

I don't know what motherboard I am using or what bios isrunning. I have a Dell Inspiron 4000 laptop which I have had for a little more than 4 years. It has had the bios updated a time or two when I had to return it for servicing.

Is your PC not acting normally Ron? if its working ok, you have no need to update the Bios.... its one of those things that if a Bios update fixes a specific issue you have then fine but if your pc is working ok then leave well alone as a bios flash can goes wrong or the update may cause a new issue.

Just found this on my Belarc Advisor.

    Main Circuit Board
Board: Dell Computer Corporation Inspiron 4000
    Bus Clock: 100 megahertz
BIOS: Dell Computer Corporation A23 11/07/2002

    Does this tell you anything?

I just downloaded this update: I4000A23.zip. That looks like I already have the latest update, doesn't it?

that may be the best idea. I am having a slow computer when it comes to shutting down and didn't know if that might be a factor. I was also reading on another forum some suggestions that might help that and the write was making the point that one should make sure the bios was updated.

I`m pretty sure your bios would be ok, its a fairly old machine. I presume the other forum gave you some advice on having a tidy up of your system that might improve the speed a bit.

fair point Ron, a Bios update if it mentioned it fixed a slow shutdown issue would indeed have helped.

Slow shutdown could be caused by many things from a slow closing background task to if you have an Nvidia graphic card/onboard the driver helper ( located in Services and called "Nvidia Driver Helper service" ... stop it and set to disabled ) is known to slow shutdown down and is actually not needed. Event Logging aslo can slow shutdown down, but its one I wouldnt disable as its helpful for troubleshooting.

as Flushed mentioned a bit of PC housekeeping does help, options are using CCleaner to remove junk files and clean out the registry.

    Defrag.. it does help.

Update the OS, drivers and any programs you have, especially backgraound running ones, Firewall, AV, AntiSpyware etc

If you have a tracks eraser program, eg. Webroot window washer etc they clear the Virtual Memory Pagefile at shutdown and will slow to a small degree shutdown down.

When you have done updates and installed new software again they sometimes slow shutdown down a bit.

I don't think I have the Nvidia graphic card but where do I find Services so I can check it out? I use RegClean frequently so I don't think I have any registry problems.

You mentioned updating programs and drivers - I try to stay updated but is there a way to check on drivers? I'm a bit in the dark about that.

Thanks for all you time and trouoble!
