New HD arrived, 160G. The bios doesn't support the full capacity. :-(

    Specs of this machine:

IBM Pent II 266 mhz, 256 megs
    Setup info on bootup:
    Machine Type/Model: 659134U
    Flash EEPROM Revision Level: NZKT42ACE
    Boot Block Rev. Level: N229A
    System Board Identifier: 98P8D4W22F0
    System Serial #: 558842F
    System UUID: 76c09e359782012992341be45412c25
    Bios Date: 06/16/00

Where do I go to get more information on a possible update for this bios, or is support for this age of machine just no longer availabe? This has been a great machine and functions perfectly with XP.

    PS

The drive I wish to install is a 160G Maxtor 7200/8MB. I also have another system, Celron 500 that limits the drive to 137G, which is faster than this machine but I like this one much better since the USB functions very reliably.

Any assistance anyone can supply is greatly appreciated.

Most likely due to the Pentium II that you have will not have a active Bios update available, the 160gb will end up being a waste in this machine as is. What you could do if you want to use it with the machine is partition it out with 32gb partitions.

Since it is a Maxtor drive, you can use the Maxtor utility to get the Celeron 500 to see more then 137gb on the drive.

Get yourself an XP compatible drive overlay and you will be able to use the full drive capacity as well.

Make certain its XP compatible though.

Hmmm. I have Maxblast, but I don't see how you can make partitions if the bios only recognizes the drive as 32gb. Would not the same thing apply to the Pentium II IBM machine as the Celron 500? Both are Pentium II.

I haven't been able to spend much time at it since I was away for the weekend.

If the Celeron can see the 137gb, then you would have to use Maxblast, or partition in two partitions, instead of multiple 32gb partitions.

Find the Bios manufacturer and go to their website and you will more than likely find an update.

For the Celeron, if you install Intel Application Accelerator, then you will be able to use the larger drive.

It can be buggy however, so it's up to you which way you go.

Partitioning, as mentioned, is also an option.

Well guys, got the HD running at 137GB in both machines. D/L MaxBlast 4, installed drive in the celron as only drive. Made a boot disk with MaxBlast and in less than 5 minutes it was running. I do lose sme space but not enough tto worry about. With thte low price of drives these days it cheaper to buy this size than a used smaller drive.

For the IBM machine I installed it as a slave, booted again with MaxBlast and again it gave me 137GB. A couple of reboots to finish the install and done.

D/L Winamp to it as we speak.

MaxBlast has it's own DDO. I can't believe how easy the process went. Before that it was fdisk and format with Win98SE boot disc and it insisted on nothing more than 34GB. Quite a learning experience.some software.

    Thanks for all your replies.
