bios upgrade guidelines?

I want to upgrade the bios on my emachine 433i(running WindowsXP) from AMI V1.4 1995 build to AMI V1.8 2000 build. I have never done this before, and I have read all the warnings on other forums. I have the file downloaded and the floppy disk ready. I was wondering if anyone has anymore tips or advice to make sure I don't wreck my system.

 

Might I suggest backing up everything before you begin (if you have not already)

Is there a particular reason you are flashing the bios? (ie: fixing an existing problem or a needed upgrade to recognize new components)

NEVER: let your power fail during installation of the new bios-(-or you will have a hard/impossible task ahead of you)

Other than that you seem to have it under control-

 

Use a UPS if possible. I would only recommend updating if you have problems, but I used to upgrade to custom BIOS back in my Socket A overclocking days.:-D

If you really want to do it, make SURE you have the correct version and all the appropriate files on the floppy, read the instructions carefully and flash away.

 

Welcome to Major Geeks! If your system is running ok and the bios update isn't to fix a problem that you are having, then I wouldn't.

 

Thanks for the input so far. I don't think I really need this, but I may try it anyway. If it fails, I need to upgrade the motherboard anyway, but I think I'll hold off for now. Also I can't find any info on AMI or Trigem or Emachines websites to see what the newer version contains. So I don't know if it will help anything, other than having a more modern look.
