Bios -what is going on here????

I decided to update the bios on Saturday on my Foxconn 945G7MD mobo using Foxconn's windows LiveUpdate program. All went well, it asked me to reboot for changes to take effect. Before restarting, I decided to update the Realtek video drivers as well using the same software. Again all went well. I then rebooted. It booted up to the windows symbol then switched off. Tried again, same. :cry
Suspecting a Bios problem I went into the Bios and tried to roll back the bios to the factory version using the Load fail safe defaults. All this did was screw up the booting. I sorted that out. After a number of attempts at rebooting (due to it switching off) I managed to check the Bios version & it was still the updated one. I now have a whole series of other symptoms/problems
    - USB ports on mobo don't work, but they do work on the PCI card.
    - keyboard stopped working (connected via keyboard port not USB) along with the mouse. i managed to get a USB mouse working off the PCI card.
    - it doesn't like rebooting, but will probably restart if left a while
    - I went back into the Bios and switched back on the USB ports as the load safe seems to have inactivated them - not very helpful.
I bravely tried rebooting & everything has suddenly started working!!! What on earth happened for so many things to go wrong??? That's the last time I'll try to update the Bios (though I stll want to try overclocking using the FoxOne program). Strangely the PC seems to be working faster now.
Sorry for the rambling story - anyone got any ideas why...
Q1 - it didn't want to reboot beyond windows - why?
Q2 - if it was the bios update, why would it cause such mayhem?

This might answer some of your questions but everyone hates bios updates even majorgeeks I think, I've only done it twice and with my fingers crossed the whole time :) Not for anyone with high blood pressure or a heart condition!

Bad idea. When you update the BIOS, do that and just that.

You also can not roll back the BIOS to the previous version. Did you make a copy of the old BIOS? On my one computer, before I flashed the BIOS, the program allowed me to make a backup just in case something went wrong. I'm not sure if this is available in all BIOS updating programs.

yes the program (Foxconn liveupdate) did offer to backup the old bios - the trouble is the program does not obviously offer you the facility to use that back up (through the program at least). What can have gone wrong by updating the bios & the video card without rebooting in between AND perhaps more importantly can it be reversed/undone???
