    Hi All!

After two weeks of “operating system & driver hell”, (and some great tips from this forum). I finally got my Dell Inspiron 1000 laptop running XP pro cleaned up, de-fragged, up-dated, and running slick.

Then I noticed that my anti-virus (Bit-Defender) didn’t show me a scan record in the AM like it always did and when I checked the virus definitions were out of date. I tried manually downloading the update and received the “you are not connected to the internet” message, even though I was indeed connected and email & browsers were working fine.

I then tried re-Installing the program, running Registry Mechanic, re-booting, lowering the firewall and running the repair utility, all to no avail.

    Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Jim

The most "likely suspect" here is that your firewall is somehow blocking the update.

Just because you can "connect with e-mail and browsers" does not mean that Bit Defender can automatically connect. Most programs cannot detect which firewall you are using so they spit out the "you are not connected to the internet" message. "Lowering the firewall" settings will not help if the firewall is specifically blocking Bit Defender.

My Advice: Check to see if your firewall is blocking the Bit Defender Update. The easiest way to check to see if the firewall is actually the problem would be to disable the firewall momentarily and then try to connect to Bit Defender Update. If you actually can connect (after disabling the firewall) then your firewall is obviously blocking the update and you'll have to change the settings.

Note: Make sure that you only disable the firewall temporarily. Also make sure that you are actually running the very latest version both your firewall as well as Bit Defender. The latest version of Bit Defender is v9.5 and the product update was released on 3/30 and can be found here.

If you still have problems; try this link to Bit Defender Live Support; where you will be able to receive technical support from a live person in real time to answer your questions.

    Good Luck!

    Thanks for the post!
Same thing with the firewall turned off.
I am running the same version on two other computers w/no problems. Both update automaticaly and scan daily.
I've cked every setting I can think of and compared settings on the other computers w/no luck.

Oh, anytime Jim... My pleasure. Sorry it did not work out for you, though.

Since the program runs on your other two computers it might very well have something to do with the Dell Inspiron 1000 laptop “operating system & driver hell” that you experienced. In any case, since you still have problems; you should try the link to Bit Defender Live Support that I mentioned earlier.

I use their free Bit Defender online scan which is very thorough and scans system's memory, all files, folders and drives' boot sector, providing the user with the option to automatically clean the infected files. I generally use the online scan about once a week because it removes trojans that other installed software seems to occasionally miss.

    Just a thought:
It may help to uninstall Bit Defender (again) and then run RegSeeker-FREEWARE - Registry | RegSeeker 1.45 Beta
    http://majorgeeks.com/RegSeeker_d2579.html
-to get what Registry Mechanic might be missing.
Make sure 'Backup before deletion' is checked (bottom left in RegSeeker Window)
Run the 'Startup entries' tab and then the *"Clean the Registry' tab
*It will probably list a whole lot of items, but look for things pertaining to Bit Defender and delete them.
Now try to reinstall Bit Defender
    Cross your fingers!

Another thing - turning your firewall off may not work. Some firewalls can continue to block stuff even when they're supposedly tuned off. You need to configure the firewall to allow the program to access the net. If the suggestions from Toni_1947 don't fix it, you should revisit the firewall issue. What firewall are you running?

Thank you all for the thoughts & ideas.

I'm running the bit Defender firewall that comes with the a/v program. I've tried disableing it to try to load the update and the windows fire wall is off.

I removed the program (again) and downloaded a trial version of Bit Defender 9, which worked. I then removed that program & re-installed mine..same "your not connected.." And I get a security warning that "your computer may be at risk". Removed the program again.

I then ran RegSeeker, deleted the errors and re-installed the program again..Same problem.

I then removed & re-installed the program on another pc. No problems whatsoever.

Somehow I've changed something on the laptop so that it no longer likes this program (it once worked fine, before I cured my "other" problems).

    Anyone have any other thoughts?

Thank all for the thoughts & suggestions. I cured the problem by buying a new a/v program. I guess the laptop just doesn't like BD (lol)

you could have tried to update in safe mode with networking. but seeing as you got a new program then i guess the point is moot.
