For personal use? I just use AVG, it's free and does the job fine for me :)

For me, my order of bestness:

    1. Sophos
    2. Panda
    3. Trend
    4. AVG
    5. AntiVir

No one on it's own is best. Usually I have sophos and AVG running on one pc, sometimes one will pick up stuff that the other one won't. The last one you install checks first. If it detects something, the other one doesn't even get to see it.

No one Anti Virus has every definition of all viruses, they all "borrow" from each other and their own experience. That's why 2 are best to be running. I usually have a different one on the sever too, Sohos and one other. AVG free doesn't run on the server.

[EDIT] That's illegal and not allowed here [/EDIT]

NOD32 is the highest rated antivirus that money will buy http://www.majorgeeks.com/NOD32_Antivirus_System_d3704.html
and I will recommend Avast http://www.majorgeeks.com/Avast_Home_Edition_d1968.html as a free antivirus alternative.

Also, it is never a good idea to run two antivirus apps at the same time. They do not provide overlapping protection and will often conflict with each other, leaving you vulnerable.

I tried BitDefender and have liked it but it is heavy on resources and I dont really like that in a antivirus program so I removed it. Overall BitDefender provides excellent protection including detection of viruses etc.. but there are other antiviruses that are better. Dont get me wrong BitDefender 9 is a great antivirus just too heavy on the resources for me.

Im going too go along with JustPlayin here and recommend you too purchase NOD32 because..

    1. Very light on resources
    2. Excellent hueristics and detection
    3. Excellent protection including an internet http scanner(IMON)
    4. Works with mostly all programs running
    5. Great support in there forum

Whichever you choose I would trial them both(not at the same time) and see which one you like the most and purchase that.
