Don't know if this is the right sub-forum for this... apologies if it is not.

For some really weird reason my monitor seems to crash every now and then. It happens when I'm playing a game, watching a movie, watching youtube, or listening to music. Obviously I'm not doing all those things at once. :D It doesn't every time I'm doing one of these things. Sometimes I can go a whole day (like yesterday) without it happening once, other times (like today) it can happen at least 5 times.

What happens, is my screen goes black (power turns off), when I'm playing a game it sounds like the game continues for a while but then the sound goes into sort of like a cd skipping noise, the same thing happens with movies and music but the skipping noise starts right when the screen goes black. I can't ctrl alt del out of it, pressing keys doesn't seem to work, the only thing I can do is manually re-start with the power button on the tower.

My monitor is a benQ G900W, that doesn't need a driver apparently. I got it on the 4th, but the problem only started happening after I re-formatted my HD last week.

    Any thoughts?

Maybe you need to explain why you did that; this could be the reason behind the crashes.

Well, I had this HD in my old comp. The CPU got fried on that one. The therm paste wasn't cleaned and re-applied since I got it about 4-5yrs ago. There wasn't any paste left on it when I removed the HS.:cry So I got a new computer from a friend (a few weeks ago) and used my old HD as the master. I was having problems with the sound. Some days it was choppy, some not, and then it stopped working. So I got an audio card, that didn't work, got another card, still didn't work. So my brother suggested re-formatting, I didn't re-format it for about year since recently. Now the sound works great but.. now, here we are with my comp sporadically crashing on me.

If you need more info let me know, I'll try to provide as much as I know. ;)

LOL sometimes I can be so silly.

I just installed the driver, so if I have any more problems I'll let you know.

Just so I don't start another thread. Are these temp readings good for a P4 3g CPU?

    (all depending on ambient temp)

    idle- 39c-42c
    load (game)- 50c-54c

I put in a new HS+F since I was getting around 47c-48c idle, and up to 64c load.

What about your display adapter/graphics card. Are you sure you have the most up to date drivers for this? Check Device Manager and make sure there are no yellow exclamation points. Even with no exclamation points you may want to look at the manufactures website for the current driver.

Also check the event log Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Event Viewer>System and see if anything related to display or monitor shows up.

I have my old agp radeon 9700 pro that I salvaged from my old comp as well. I installed the catalyst control center, and the newest driver.

Ahhh ha! There's an error in the admin tools systems saying it's recognizing my monitor as a CRT instead of LCD. I'd assume this is the problem... how would I go about fixing this?

Thanks for all the help BTW. ;)

EDIT: Sorry... in the properies of the error it says "crt invalid display type"
