Bizarre network/internet problem

    WinXP Home SP2, Dell laptop. Will not connect either wired or wirelessly. Running IPCONFIG results in normal repsonses. However, if I ping, for example www dot yahoo dot com, I get "timed out". If I use Yahoo's IP address (ping 209.131.36.158) it works fine. :confused So something is not connecting web site names to the appropriate IP addresses. I've done a Winsock/TCP-IP repair as described in KB811259 and it didn't help.
    Any ideas?

    Try an ipconfig /flushdns from the command line.
