    Hi

I have been playing call of duty Black ops multiplayer since november 2010 with no problems until about 2-3 months ago.

I have started having problems with the game crashing either when im ingame or in the server browser menu. When I open task manager is says "Black opsmp.exe not responding.

I then either have to wait 5-10 minutes or restart my pc before I can reload either the game or steam.

I have uninstalled both steam and black ops and reinstalled them to no joy.

All my software/drivers are up to date.

Any suggestions would be most appriciated

    Thanks

Without knowing anything about your system, one can only guess as to where the problem may lie.

    Ok, nice rig.

Have you made any hardware, software, or configuration changes?

    Tried running Steam as administrator?

I seem to recall Creative not playing nicely at times. Maybe try it with onboard sound?

When the game crashes, does it provide an error message?

    Thanks

I have updated graphics card but that was after this problem started. Don't think ive changed anything else, other than windows updates.

I will try running steam as admin.

It does not provide any error message. Are there logs stored on pc that might show an error message?

My friend has exactly the same system and he is not having any problems at all

I completely uninstalled graphics card drivers and re-installed tham and set steam to run as admin and that worked for 1 day, now ive updated steam and it crashes all the time and task manager won't close the program.

Also the mouse curser is hidden behind the desk top.

Any other suggestions if now I will format the hd and re-install windows. see if that does anything

Set the game exe to run as administrator, instead of Steam. Steam shouldn't need full admin rights to run itself, but the game might.

Do you have Steam cloud and/or community overlay enabled? Turn them off, and try the game again. Lots of games that pre-date the cloud have issues with it, and lots of games that shouldn't have issues with the community overlay still do.

    Agreed with Mimsy.

One other thing, this is a long shot and an odd one but it worked for me with 2 different games with similar problems.
    Using "Game Booster"
The only thing I can think of with my situation was that some process was running that Game Booster shut down, never did find out what the actual cause was which is a bit flakey of me but hey.. it worked lol
    Just a thought.

I did actually think. About game booster effecting the game and uninstalled it, unfortunately I uninstalled it whilst in game mode and didn't restart pc so I guess if it was game booster shutting down necessary processes they would still have been off. Doh!

I have now formatted hard drive and reinstalled windows and seems to be running ok although I haven't played it very much since

Thanks for all your help everyone

Older versions of GameBooster would sometimes shut down processes they shouldn't. Make sure you have the latest one if you plan to keep using it, or if it keeps shutting down things it shouldn't, consider switching to an alternative. :)
