Like most of these postings, my system hangs after the splash on a nice black screen. I’ve tried the ‘in-place upgrade’/system repair, choosing the first option for XP Pro setup and not the “recovery console.” After I press F8, the following options appear:

"The following list shows the existing partitions and unpartitioned space on this computer. Use the UP and DOWN ARROW keys to select an item in the list.

    • To set up Windows XP on the selected item, press ENTER.
    • To create a partition in the unpartitioned space, press C.
    • To delete the selected partition, press D>

76431 MB Disk 0 at Id0 on bus 0 on atapi [MBR]
    C: partition1 (Kahiau) [NTFS} 76332 MB (36761 MB free)
    Unpartitioned space 8MB

5860 MB Disk on disk [MBR]
    Unpartitioned space 39MB
    D: partition1 (KAHIAU’S IP) [FAT32] 5820MB (1996 MB free) "

What should I do next? I’m afraid to set up XP again or delete a partition and risk losing my data on the drive. Thanks in advance for your help!
