Black Screen at XP startup, cannot boot

As I was trying to rid a friend's pc of the Vundo/Virtumonde malware, it went to a bsod (which apparently this virus fakes) and the pc became unresponsive. I cold shut down and restarted. After

Upon restarting, the bootup process shows the normal Windows XP screen with the "moving" progress bar. When that goes away, the screen simply remains black. The mouse arrow shows up, and is responsive, but this is all that happens - Windows+R doesn't work, Ctrl+Alt+Del doesn't work, even the hard disk activity light is lifeless. Safe mode, VGA Mode, and "Last Known Good Configuration" all do the same thing.

I have used the Ultimate Boot Disk (on usb) to check the RAM (no errors after several different tests) and repair the master boot record (as I don't have an XP disc out here). However, when I tried to run a System Information program to get some possibly helpful specs to post here, the system hung at this line:

I'm at a loss and beg for help!
I'll check here frequently, hoping to get this fixed sooner than later.

I decided it would be faster and easier to wipe and fresh install - I've already wiped the drive (he'll be using linux for a while). Thanks for looking into it Malware Hater. And DomLuc, you were right too.

 

i have the same problem on another machine, i tried to boot from an XP disk

i got the following message

Isapnp.sys file is corrupt or damaged

do i have to change the XP disk or try another approach
