Black screen with cursor before login, but nothing more.
I need to reboot Windows 7. I've a second computer and a usb flash drive.

Which ISO file do I put to flash drive to reinstall Windows 7 & run in boot mode? It's an absolute headache finding the correct file and getting it to work in boot mode.

I cannot login to the problemated laptop at all. I don't have the Windows CD.

    thanks for any help

You can download a Windows 7 (32-bit & 64-bit) ISO file that you can burn to DVD and use legally by entering your own Microsoft Windows 7 product key:

    http://www.askvg.com/direct-downloa...nd-untouched-windows-7-iso-32-bit-and-64-bit/

Here's the disclaimer from the site:

"DISCLAIMER: The download links given in this topic are genuine and absolutely legal. You should have a valid product key with you to be able to install Windows 7 using these ISO files. If you don't enter a product key, Windows will run only for 30 days.

When we purchase a new computer, it comes pre-installed with an OS, most of the times the OS is Microsoft Windows. Now almost all new computer systems are coming pre-installed with Windows 7.

Some computer manufacturers provide a recovery disc with their computers so that you can restore the OS in case you face problems while starting Windows.

But what would you do if you didn't get the recovery disc or if you lost the recovery disc. Even if you have your genuine product key noted down in your diary or printed on the backside of your computer, you can't use it to reinstall Windows because you don't have the setup disc.

To solve your problem, we are going to list direct download links for Windows 7. These are genuine and official download links. Its completely LEGAL to use them as they are hosted by "Digital River" online store which is an official distribution partner of Microsoft. These ISO files don't come with a product key. You'll need to use your own product key to activate Windows. The links provide an untouched Windows 7 ISO which is a fully functional 30-day trial version which can be converted into full version after entering your product key and activating it."

    Downloaded and extracted (file attatched).
Now I try running the USB flash in BOOT mode on the Windows 7 computer, but nothing happens. Is there one specific file I need to save in the flash drive for it to work, rather than the whole package?

Perhaps I need to properly install it, but on another Windows 7 computer. Currently doing the work with a Vista-run laptop.

HDD might just be dead. If ur on a laptop, put your ear where the HDD is located, hear any ticking or clicking sound?
When fixing dead boots on a win7 device I notice the black screen will usually/not always show a error message,
if no message, then most of the time/not all the time the HDD has stopped r/w correctly...
    can you boot to BIOS?
if u can't then pull out the HDD, then try to boot to BIOS again, if u can, then you know for sure your HDD is dead.

Did you simply Extract the .iso contents into the flash drive?

Sounds to me like you need to create the USB into a bootable flash drive.

to create the ISO file to make the USB drive bootable.

Once you have done that, you will simply figure out the boot menu key on your keyboard, or set the boot order inside the BIOS to boot off the USB drive first (dont forget to change it back afterwards).

When you boot to the USB device, it should come up with the Windows Re-Installation process.

    jbuk...

Just to put into different words what rjordan said. You need to find a burner program, so that you can burn the .iso to your flash drive.

This is a little bit confusing at first, but the feature you are looking for in the burner program is "Burn a Disk Image". Using this type of burn, the .iso will be extracted virtually and then the extracted files burned to the flash drive. So...->one file (the .iso you downloaded and extracted) will be turned into many files on the flash drive. Actually, not only do you not copy the .iso to the flash drive, it won't even be one of the files on the drive after the burn...

There are several free burner programs. Here is the download at Major Geeks:

    Hi

Use this Microsoft tool, while it was designed for Windows 7, it works with any Microsoft ISO and makes your USB drive bootable (so long as you have a motherboard that is capable of booting to USB). The key part here is making the USB drive bootable, the hard way is manually via Diskpart and command line code, but this app makes it easy, I use it all the time and lately with a Windows 8.1 ISO.

(It's a miracle!) Pretty much sorted here. Booted the installation disk via USB, now using system restore. If it gets stuck at 'restoring files' then I'll simply re-install Windows despite the loss of programs. No huge problem though.
    Much appreciated guys.

OK one last issue here guys.
I've successfully re-installed Windows 7, however the drivers have not installed. The screen is what looks like safe mode, and I cannot connect to the internet on there.
Does anyone have all of the correct driver links to upload to my USB?

jbuk, which drivers are you referring to, and how do you know they didn't install?
Did you get some sort of error message from Windows? If so, what did it say (approximately)?

It refuses to even connect to the internet at this point, so simply updating the drivers won't work.

You need to install the chipset/mobo drivers.

A brief walkthrough on doing this would be great. I've tried installing them to no avail. Perhaps I need to import specific files. Brainache. :zzz

I can't help with your chipset drivers until you post the brand and exact model of computer you are using.

When trying to assess a possible hardware problem, it's necessary to have certain information about the system in question. Rather than ask for each item piecemeal you can provide all relevant info by doing the following:

First I need you to download a program called Speccy from the following page:

    http://majorgeeks.com/Speccy_d6358.html

    • Install the program and don't change any of the settings. Just leave them at their default settings
    • Run the program and let it analyze your system (takes less than 30 seconds). When it finishes click FILE >>Save As Text
    • Save the text file to your desktop.
    • Go to your desktop and open the text file with notepad (just double click on it). Edit out any personal information including serial numbers, then save it.
    • If you know how to archive files using the ZIP or RAR format then go ahead and archive the text file. If not, then don't worry about it, just leave the text file as it is.
    • Then go to http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=86880 to learn how to attach a file to your post.
    • Post another message in this thread with the aforementioned text file attached.

That will give people here something to work with in diagnosing your problem.

You are going to have to do some clicking.
    Start here http://www.acer.co.uk/ac/en/GB/content/drivers
select Win 7 and notebook, aspire then scroll down to the model 5742 and you will see all the drivers.
The chipset driver is the 13th entry in the list. Version 9.1.1.1024 at 2.3MB from 2010/8/18

    I say 'all done'..
So I downloaded the correct drivers (thanks for pinpointing them!), and ran 'Setup' on my Acer. It said driver setup successful.
Now I've tried restarting, and clicking 'Scan for hardware changes' in Device Manager, and 'Add legacy hardware' - to no avail.
'Device driver software was not successfully installed'. It hasn't worked.

Updating drivers: it should be so simple.

If this driver issue remains unsolved, then I'll just take it to be repaired.
