    Hi,
I am trying to fix a Packard Bell i Media X800 desktop, with black screen & fan running, would not turn off with PC button, I thought cmos had failed, replaced that, CPU was not seated, fixed that, started up to black screen, it has XP home, tried to fix with my XP Pro CD but but loaded it instead, I realized I cannot use that, as I will not be able to activate it

The screen is hard to see, has only 4 bit colour available.

In doing this, I have wiped out the XP Home & drivers for Ethernet Audio & Video.
PC still has the XP Home sticker with key on the side

I tried downloading Zorin 6.2 32bit OS using my Vista PC, using a DVD, but it will not fully install or run properly in live from disc, I don't have restore discs for XP Home OS or drivers & of course I can't go on-line with it either, I would like to keep Zorin OS also,

Thanks for anything you can suggest

    Packard Bell i Media X800
    P4 2.5 processor
    512mb ram
    40gb hdd
    DVD R/RW
XP Home 32 bit, but now has XP Pro SP2 32 bit unactivated

    Hi

We can get your drivers back with the actual product code/serial ID which can look like this iMedia (PT.U03-PV.U03) for your iMedia but as their are a number of models similar but with different specs we would need the aforementioned code/serial ID

To find this you can run the info in this page HERE and the info is
Then finding the correct drivers is fairly easy. However there is a BUT coming sadly, you would need the original Windows XP Home on your PC or a fully Licenced and Activated Pro version (while we can install the drivers on your Pro version that will work, it will hit the need for activation at some point).

To install the drivers we would just need to use your working Vista PC or any PC that can connect to the internet and download the drivers and transfer to the affected iMedia PC via CD/DVD or USB pendive.

Did you ever have recovery disks for this PC as some Packard Bell PCs have a recovery partition on the Hard Drive, so worth trying the info HERE

    Hi David GP,
This is my first time I hope I have this right?
Thanks for your help, much appreciated!

    Here is the S/N 2475777110 & the Product No P020160259. date, 2001
I did look through the list on Packard Bell's old page listing only to find that it is not there, so I wrote to them asking for a restore CD for OS & drivers, they said I could have them for 51.06 Pounds a bit steep for such an old machine, I downloaded Speccy via another PC & it seemed the iMedia is 2001 manufacture.

Packard Bell only goes back to 2004, they also said that my S/N & P/N were not listed & to check, I have a number of times & so they could no longer help.

I have no discs, it was a neighbours PC that I was trying to fix for her, she has since closed her ISP account & given the PC to me, it came in the condition with the black screen as I have stated previously.
I tried to download one of their ethernet drivers, but when I restarted the PC & checked it sill had the yellow symbol.

Can I get the drivers & utilities & then put on Zorin OS & delete XP that is not activated?

Please do you know why Zorin would not fully load or run in Live from disc?
    Much Thanks G

    Hi

As you have used Speccy on that PC then could you follow the below and attach the log as instructions?

I cannot find those ID codes either and date doesn't list to similar models of iMedia PCs that I have fond in the Packard Bell legacy database of drivers HERE so the log above may allow us to narrow down the drivers from the database.

BUT you will still need a valid Windows XP Licence to keep the PC running ok with Windows.

As for Zorin, I have not used that Linux version but most are similar, so a few questions on what actions you took with Zorin.

    1. Did you follow the install instructions and then burn the ISO with Imgburn at default settings? if you did did what type of CD did you use a CDR or CDRW?
    2. Would need to see the log from above to check HDD free space as Zorin needs 5GB free space to install and some min specs HERE, the LiveCD should work though, so long as you meet min specs.

I would burn the ISO to a CDR and at a 1x speed with ImgBurn, it will take longer but is likely to burn and work better.

Then when you boot to the CD of Zorin, what error messages if at all did you get to give a clue as to why it did not work?

But try again with the above steps and note any install issues or messages.

Yes you are doing this right :)

    Hi David GP,
    Thanks again for your help.
Sorry I have taken some time to continue as I have bad health & am only now able to continue, here goes!

I have attached the Speccy report.

As for Zorin, I did the burn with Roxio, as far as loading in live from disk it would only go as far a the Zorin blue streaked splash screen with only the mouse pointer.

When I tried to download it, the download got as far as the desk top but incomplete & stalled, then it seemed to keep trying to install but only getting to the same point.

I checked the disk in my Vista PC running live from disk & it loaded & ran perfectly.

I had used the only discs I had, Sony DVD+RW, but burned it with Roxio at Max speed, I have since downloaded Imgburn & burned the DVD again, but at 2.4X, my' PC would not do 1X.

I had the same results with running it live from disc it stalled a the Zorin blue streak splash screen with just the mouse pointer, I have noticed though that the light on the DVD drive has gone off with the stall.

The images in Zorin have been crisp & clear, but in windows very basic & hard to read some of the type.
Thanks again for any help, I hope I have covered it all?
    Much thanks G

    Hi Graham

Looked over your specs and they seem ok for Zorin but I have no idea why it will not install, I would suggest to try Ubuntu and see if that works, similar OS in Linux. Just a test and see if it works.

Likely why it ran in your Vista PC ok is that its better hardware and more up to date.

    Hi David,
Thank you for your help, I am afraid it seems to be all for nothing, I did the download & burn to disc of Ubuntu, but when I went to turn on the PB, there was nothing, so I checked the mother board & the green light was on but no other life, I guess it was a faulty power unit all the time?

Just for interest, I had managed to get Zorin to load fully in the end but it would never get past the sign on page, the screen would go black, unless I started up in repair mode, it did go online & update, but nothing seemed to work fully & some of the desk top was missing & flashing screen.

It does say on the Zorin site that it is a version suitable for older PCs,
    Minimum specs :-
For the LXDE based versions (Lite):
    266 MHz x86 processor
    2GB of Hard Drive space
128 MB of system memory (RAM)
Graphics card capable of 640x480 resolution
    Sound card

It was not a useless venture, because I actually did learn from it, hope others may too, especially to take time & research first before doing these sort of things & to back up drivers first!! Especially if one does not have recovery discs.

Thank you for your time David, very much appreciated, but I will take the PB to the recycle depot
    Thank you again
    Regards Graham
