I've got a HP desktop running Windows 7. I changed the monitor to a Sony TV with a VGA input. I have a GeForce 8400 graphics card. The monitor is connected with a DVI to VGA adapter and then a VGA cable.

When I start up the Windows logo appears but the screen goes black before I get to the login screen. If I start up in Safe Mode, there's no problem.

Any idea how I can fix this please?

At device manager remove the monitor and refresh it. then it should get the right settings for your new monitor. I think the problem is related to refreshing rate and screen resolution rate.

It sounds like you probably have your drivers for the card set up OK. I would try adjusting the screen resolution in safe mode to something that you know the Sony TV can display. You may want to google the model number of the Sony TV with the word "specs" or "specifications" to get the possible screen resolutions it can display. Then in Safe Mode either open Nvidia Control Center or right-click a blank area of the Desktop and select Screen Resolution and set it to one of the possible resolutions that match the Sony specs.

Try something like 800X600 or 1280X720 and see if that allows you into Normal Mode. Then fine tune the resolution from there.

I've opened device manager and tried looking for how to remove the monitor, but I couldn't see how to do it. Any ideas?
