Black Screen, White Cursor

Spent Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday morning trying to resolve this problem:

1) At startup, I see the normal POST stuff

2) Then I see the Windows XP Splash screen with the progress bar.

3) Then the screen goes black, with a white cursor. Cursor moves, but nothing else works. CTRL-ALT-DEL will not bring up anything.No amount of time passing gets it through login.

4) Same thing happens in Safe Mode (Except I get the "safe mode" titles top and bottom in aqddition to the cursor)

5) Same thing happens in Safe Mode with Networking.

6) Same thing happens in Safe Mode with Command Prompt.

7) Same thing happens in Last Known Good Configuration.

Googled for hours. Tried several fixes (as best I could - the only thing I can get to boot is an XPE CD - which works just fine, thankyouverymuch, which eliminates hardware problems, to my way of thinking.)

I finally ended up performing a Windows XP Repair Installation, as outlined at http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm. Machine is up and running again.

This morning, a second machine on the same network has the same problem! Which leads me to believe it's some sort of Malware.

Any ideas?

 

It could definitely be malware, or a worm working it's way through your network. Personally, I'd disconnect all PCs from the network (unplug the network cables or turn off the router) and I'd run the steps found here in the Major Geeks Malware Removal Guide. If you still have problems after running the steps exactly as they are described, post in the Malware forum and the experts there can tell you how to fix the problem. Or, if it isn't malware, they can tell you that too and send you back here.

I have same problem, only I wasn't on any sites I could get malware? I also am on a secure network. I was doing my homework and my computer froze and just like quit so I had to reboot and stuff now I get that problem. The freezing happened few times before I am just scared I like fried my comp or something. I need help aswell the one difference is I get past the login screen, and your problem ends up on my desktop. x.x
I have Windows Vista or whatever- can anyone help me?
