I have an HP Pavilion s 5000 with windows 7 home premium and when I boot it goes to a black screen with the mouse cursor I can move the cursor and it will boot into safe mode and last known good configuration but that's it, when I reboot it goes back to the black screen with a cursor I tried to system repair and it failed. I tried putting in a 7 home premium disk and do a repair but it failed too.

It's in my original post, it will boot into safe mode and last known good configuration just fine.

    Thanks, Banjomaniac

I think the usual advice at this point is to disable your startup programs, if you have any set to run on start up. In Safe Mode type msconfig in the run box on the start menu. Go to Startup and deselect everything that isn't necessary. Then see if the PC will boot...

Sorry I missed your original statement about safe mode. I was just going to ask if you tried a system restore to a time before this problem started.

This is a friends pc and she had the system restore turned off so there is no option for that. I was told the pc had Norton anti-virus on it from the store a trial version, they bought web root antivirus from Best Buy and installed it then after that they un installed Norton and that's when the problem started. I'll try msconfig tonight and see if the antivirus is causing the problem.

    Thanks, banjomaniac

msconfig didn't help either, I disabled all the extra stuff and had just essential windows stuff at startup and no go. I saved all files and pics and such to an external drive so I have that. I can't boot to last known configuration anymore, I ran A.V.G. antivirus and it deleted cookies and trackers and after that it only boots to safe mode. I can select safe mode with networking but it actually boots to regular safe mode which it was doing all along cause I haven't been able to get online at all. I'll read some more and see what I can do next, might restore to factory settings from the hp recovery partition.

    Thanks, banjomaniac

If you have everything important, I would try the factory settings too, but this is in my opinion starting to sound more like a hardware problem ,, at least to me.
