Black Screen With Cursor on XP

I have a Dell Inspiron 9400. Using XP Media Center SP3. So I restarted my laptop after I moved and saw something about a file missing or corrupted. Since then I haven't seen the screen again when I restarted. It was like on a DOS prompt.

Dell splash screen started and so does the Windows screen. When it tries to load, its just a black screen and the cursor is available.

'Restore to Last Known Config' doesn't work. Nor can I boot into Safe Mode without the same problem.

I do have files on the laptop I'd have to get off. I don't have a recovery disc or the original software. I do have a re-installation XP SP2.

 

Remove the hard drive from the laptop. Connect it to a working computer with an adapter similar to this

grab the files you want from the hd.
