Okay, so I have a HP Pavilion (yuck!) in my posession, with on board video, Intel Core 2 Duo CPU 3 GB RAM, Win7.

When the machine is booting, it goes through all the motions fine (BIOS, Starting Windows), but when it comes to the 'blue' loading screen (W7 with the green 'shoots') it will often 'lock up' (so the little loading circle remains stationary) and stop, while displaying large black, 1 - 2 inch 'stripes' down the centre of the screen (sometimes these lines have bits of red through the, but I think this is down to the output more than the screen).

Tested the screen on another machine, it''s fine. RAM is tested as ok. CPU stress tested ok. Think it's the video (which is on the motherboard)? Running out of ideas.

    Sometimes it will boot!

    :) thanks peeps

Firstly, dunno what your saying yuck for :confused HP Pavilions are excellent machines. But as with all brands, makes and models, they have problems, in your case, the Graphics Card is going to be a great start, see if you can borrow or buy a cheap PCI or PCIE (if the machine will take it) Graphics Card for your machine.

What model Pavilion do you have?

Sorry, I said 'yuck' as I have come across about half a dozen of these with various faults in the last 12 months. Nothing personal!

I'll try the video card as you suggest and let you know the feedback.

    Model number is a6744uk.

Looks like either a small PCI or PCIE Graphics card will fit, definitely give it a go and see if it helps.

Oh and btw it just clicked in your OP you said 3GB of RAM, just so you know, you've actually got 4gb, it's just windows will only see 3gb (3.5 in some cases), until you upgrade to a 64 bit system.

Have you tried booting to safemode to see if the problem occurs there too?
