blank blue screen

Ok here goes I was deleting programs and files using XP uninstaller paying more attention to girl friends rants about dropping her cell in the toilet and what she was going to do about it then what I was doing. “Laugh here please “. I must have unleashed a virus the system rebooted and came up with error NTLDR missing well came on here and searched the threads and got no fast in my pay grade so grabbed the the neighborhood geek and strapped him with the problem and an I pad with the threads on here. Well he got it to the blue screen of death and then to just a blank blue screen. Feeling bad about taking up 3 hours of his day off I cut him loose and started reading threads. Using the XP diagnostic program I kept getting a hard drive issue and could not boot from disc. Note: I really trying not to loose the files I have on the laptop. Next day at work a coworker suggest I try a disk with ubuntu on it to see if it is the hard drive. Just did that and all the files come up using ubuntu just on the disc. So sure now it is not hardware issue. The Laptop is dell inspiron E1705 the reinstallation DVD says Microsoft windows XP Media Center Version 2005 With update rollup 2. At this time with the ubuntu disc in Im not connected to wifi but can connect hardwired if need to router and go online or I have a desk top that writes to DVD. Any suggestion
