    Hi there,,

    sorry for any newbie annoyances....

since my frined installed windows xp pro for me my new toshiba dvd-rom sd-m1612 can't read blank cd's. i've tried different types but it always says
    Disc not formatted
Windows cannot read from this disk. The disc might be corrupted, or it could be using a format that is not compatible with windows.
but it reads and plays burned cd's and dvd's fine.

It didn't used to say that and i happily burned things with nero burning.

since discovering this problem i tried bits of several things on the net but nothings made any difference. I uninstalled and reinstalled nero but it could never recognise my dvd drive. so is at the mo not on my comp.
i searched for PxHelp20.sys files to delete them but there were none.
i searched for upper and lower filters but didn't delete them as i didn't know what i was doing.
i tried downloading firmware from toshiba but it made no difference, file name TOSHV224.SYS and it installed through ms dos and deleted files and i went ahead as instructed but it has had no effect.
i've always worked out problems through the net before but i am getting to my limit here as everyone is talking about firmware, or xp pro incompatibillities or regional codes or nero problems or driver updates but i am out of my depth here.
before xp pro i used nero and burned happily. now nero wont recognise my dvd drive. i can play dvd's and burned cd's (mp3's or avi's etc) happily.
if i try to use nero, nero won't even find the drive properly, so again that makes me think its not a laser thing. And it does read all other discs fine...
thankyou very very much for any help
    peace and love.

well it's not supposed to happen and i'd like to fix it.

It doesn't happen to others with xp pro so, it's not normal, as such.

im hoping someone can help me go through the possible problems like drivers or nero etc.

I don't understand what you mean by "can't read blank CD's"?

Is the drive displayed correctly in My Computer and Device Manager?

What is the exact nature of the problem you are having?

It's not drivers. You don't need to worry about drivers with CD/DVD drives. Windows has native support, it supplies the necessary files required.

Hi and thanks for all your replies,,,

    thanks
    Tim
i think maybe i don't need that as it does show on my computer.? and i can play dvd's and cd's.

    Imsomniac - thanks also....

what i mean is, the message which i quoted at the beginning comes up when i put a blank cd in.

so i cannot burn onto any blank disc.

as far as i can tell in 'my computer' my dvd drive shows up fine. It shows up as

DVD drive under type it says - cd drive

Right-Click on the drive and select Properties / Recording Tab and then check the "Enable CD Recording On This Drive" box.

I've got exactly the same problem with XP Pro, Toshiba laptop and DVD burner.
Will not accept blank CD's or DVD's. Error message comes up.

D:\ is not accessible. Incorrect function.
    Google link as follows.

    http://www.google.com/search?as_q=&num=20&hl=en&ie=ISO-8859-1&btnG=Google+Search&as_epq=d%3A%5C+is+not+accessible.+Incorrect+function&as_oq=&as_eq=&lr=lang_en&as_ft=i&as_filetype=&as_qdr=all&as_nlo=&as_nhi=&as_occt=any&as_dt=i&as_sitesearch=&as_rights=&safe=images

I've been putting off solving this problem due to other happenings but the google link may / should help resolve it. Bazza

    thankyou matacombie and bigbazza,,,,

I am touched to see all these replies....been stuck with this for so long.

I tried (and had tried before) to -
Right-Click on the drive and select Properties / Recording Tab and then check the "Enable CD Recording

    but it is already enabled.

i will try big bazza's suggestion now, but im not sure as i don't have this
"D:\ is not accessible. Incorrect function."
problem as such, but going to do what the advice on the links say which is to uninstall then restart comp....

im sure i'll get to the bottom of this with all your little tips and advice...thankyou!!!

    oh poooooooooooooh!

im talking pooooh here....it isn't there!

in reply to matacombies advice....that recording tab in properties isn't there....
i realised when i reinstalled the dvd drive and still had the same problem..went to have a look at how to test the problem and saw the picture of what the properties tabs should look like
    http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/setup/learnmore/bott_03september16.mspx
and now i see i don't have the recording tab.

im embarrased to say the thing i thought was recording enabled is actually

"enable digital cd audio for this cd-rom device"
    which is ticked.

so maybe...this is where the problem can be uncovered! ?

If you don't have a recording tab, it means XP doesn't recognise your drive as a burner.

    Is it compatible with XP?

Has it ever worked in the past?

I just re read the post again.

You say it's a DVD Rom? If that's so, it won't have a recording tab as it's not a burner.

Also, is it listed correctly in Device Manager?

(deleting Upper and Lower Filters is worth a try. Windows will create new ones when you reboot anyway. Just make sure you back up or create a Restore Point prior)

    oh chit.

i thought i used to burn with it.

i have memories of burning with it. and i have cd's that i burned before xp ro was installed.

but i forgot i used my sisters portable cd drive for a while. Maybe I didn't actually try burning with the new dvd drive until after xp pro was installed.

so you have actually all helped me realise the problem...it's just not what i thought it was. So i can be at peace now. This problem has been bugging me for ages.!

I wish you all well and thankyou.

im off to drink a cuppa tea and have a little think.

    xxxxxxx

    Follow up:

Yesterday, I finally went to the local TOSHIBA retailler. Their service department said the DVD burner drive must be replaced. It's under warranty so I will drop it in next Monday and see what happens. Bazza

    This is what you do

to fix the d:\ is not accessible incorrect function problem you have to go to MY COMPUTER right click your CDRW drive and go to PROPERTIES then click the RECORDING tab at the top and click ENABLE CD RECORDING ON THIS DRIVE then click apply and you should be able to acess your cdrw drive

in services list find IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service, right click
    select properties.
Set startup type to automatic, and start service.
    Click ok, close services window.
    Now try your blank disks.

    Serioussnake.
Welcome to Major Geeks. :D As per your suggestion, my settings were already as you suggested. I took my laptop back to the shop for their investigation. Solution was a corrupted burning program (Sonic RecordNow) bundled with my Toshiba laptop.

All the other backup programs I tried, as well, probably did not help. :p
On their advice I re-installed Sonic Record Now.

I also deleted / uninstalled all the other backup programs I had tried.

I think one of the brand new DVD +R DL layer disks I was using as a test was either faulty or my laptop did not like that brand. Switching to another brand (Sony for DVD +R single layer and TDK for DVD +R Double layer) solved the problem.

I am now able to carry out selected folder backups or Full backup for the first time for months. Did a full backup as well as backed up MyDocuments and Downloads folders yesterday. Bazza
