I have a LITEON 16X DVD+ and -R/+ and - RW DVD burner. Just got it a few weeks ago. It came with legacy DVD-R blank DVD's. (25 pack.) I also bought Sony DVD+R DVD's.(50 pack) When i use the DVD-R's they kinda skip alittle bit, or the picture gets screwed up and it skips a scene. The sony DVD+R's work perfect. I am running out on the Sony so i bought Sony DVD-R DVD's.(50 pack) They now skip and do the same thing with the legacy DVD-R's. Is it just DVD-R? I burned 3 DVD's all different movies and they all skip, and get messed up while playing. I use CloneDVD2 with a write speed of 4x. Does the speed have something to do with it also? I am upset that i spent money on those sony DVD-R's and there doing this. Also, dont know if this will help but on the DVD-R's it has AccuCORE on it..and the Sony DVD+R's that i bought a few weeks ago do not. thanks all!

Some burners like particular brands and baulk at a supposedly similar disk from another manufacturer. What I would try first to try and cure the skipping is to burn at the lowest possible speed and see if that cures the problem.

I have often found by lowering the speed a good burn can be achieved. :)

While I agree that a lower speed setting may help, I gotta say that a good burner should be like a cheap whore, and accept all discs.

In my experience, nothing produced better, more consistent burns than having the right software. Luckily, the best I've found were all free!

For quite some time I've used DVDDecrypter (DD)to rip an image of a disc, and then burn it.
I've also used DVDShrink (DS) to compress that image (if necessary) to a size that would fit on a single layer disc.

However, since neither of these apps are updated anymore, you may encounter errors while ripping. (I haven't come across it yet, though) Apparently, DVDFabDecrypter (DF)is an excellent freeware ripping alternative, that is updated, but I've never used it, so this is secondhand info.

What has always worked for me, is to rip a full image with DD, and then open that image with DS and compress it to less than 4.7GB. Then, I take the compressed image and burn it with DD. Works like a charm. Doom9 is a good resource for these apps.

Media is a bit of a major topic though, and I don't mean to be overly dismissive of it. I seem to have most problems with Sony Media, ironically. I would recommend that if the above steps don't resolve the problem, you should experiment with other brands. I've yet to have a single problem with Memorex and Maxell media.

There is a program you can get for liteon dvd burners that will tell you how many errors are on a disk. There are two kind of errors PI and PiF,
For Pi error you want to get an average of less than 280 and on PIF errors an average of less than 32. Now you may have spikes that are high on each but what you should be concerned with are the averages, the less errors the better the disk. Now their are some dvd players that just do not like certain disk. I have Used Memorex, and fuji disks and had no problem.

Agreed. It's always available, accepts anything, gets on well with your floppy, and doesn't give you bad burns. :)

You would think, and assume that as these discs came with the burner, then they would be guaranteed to work.

Take them back to the store and swap them for another brand. (although I've yet to see a LiteOn baulk at media, they are super reliable).

Thanks everybody, i started to use sony because my buddy told me he never had problems with it, and i never did have problems with the DVD+R's. Like i said i was running out and all best buy had of sony was DVD-R so i got that. It makes me mad cuz i used 4 DVD's already trying to get it to work. Can i still take it back even though i used 4 DVD'S? I didnt think so. I want this these to work because they were 30 bucks..Anyway tried burning at the lowest speed, still does it, but not as much. I took all of them and played them on my Mom's DVD player, which is a sony, and they worked with no problems. Maybe its my Samsung DVD player, but it can play DVD-R's..

Ah, it's probably your DVD player. We weren't originally given that info.

The basic rules for media and burning in general are,

Not all drives support every media brand, find a compatible and reliable brand and stick with it.

You cannot always go by media manufacturer, as there are really only 3 or 4 companies that make them for everyone else who then re-brand them.

What works in one player, may not work in another as you have discovered.

Different lasers in the different players don't have the same sensitivities.

Burning is more a black-art than a science, so there are definitely no guarantees.

Thanks Insomniac, i understand some brands dont work in all DVD players, but the sony DVD+R ones that i first got work perfectly with no problems in my DVD player, thats why its very odd to me.

It's just the way it goes. Both my DVD players (a good Pioneer & a cheap Nova) can play everything I throw at them. Two of my neighbors can't play my DVD-R disks at all, yet the brother of one of them makes DVD-R disks which work in one & not the other. Black art indeed.

Agreed, and it's even more true for earlier models.
