Hello, my husband has Vista as well. He is having all kinds of problems with our neighbor getting into our network and messing up his machine. They have turned off his Zone alarm and settings. He turns off disable file sharing and has done all that you mention to do and they somehow get back in and turn them back on. It's like he has no control over his computer. We are having a real problem, do you have any other ideas what to try. My husband is very frustrated and we are at wits end trying to keep them blocked out.
    Thank you in advance.

I am assuming that these hacker neighbors of yours must be jumping onto your network via a wireless router in your home? If this is the case, you need to secure your connection using a WEP key/password, which is programmed in the router itself. This way, when they try to log onto your network, they will be prompted to enter a password.

If you are using a wireless router, configure it for MAC address filtering. Make sure you are not using WEP for "security" - use WPA2 if the router has it. If it does not, then buy one that does (they're not expensive).

Here's a link to some info....

Other potenial......it's remotely (no pun intended) possible that spyware w/remote access somehow was installed on the machine. Make sure you have Windows Defender enabled, and run a full scan on the computer with it disconnected from the network.

    Good luck with it.

We don't have a mac, we windows Visa.

Just now they switched his user name off.

We do use a connection using a WEP key/password and it is programmed in the router itself.

The MAC address filter has nothing to do with the type of computer. It is the Media Access Controller. The router will have a wireless configuration section in it's set up. MAC address filtering should be in there. Also, be SURE that the router is password protected.

WEP is useless. Any high-school kid can crack WEP.

Lastly, if you're really serious about catching the intruder, hire a professional. The cost would not be more than a couple hundred dollars. Then you press charges.

Not sure how you connect to your router, but if you are connected using Ethernet (actual cables), I would advise disabling the Wi-Fi portion of your router if your model allows it, at least until you can get a lock on keeping them out (what a scary situation). In the meantime, JustAnotherDude mentioned disconnecting your router and scanning for spyware, which is a good idea, along with his recommendation of security measures above the WEP level.

Thank you both very much. I am going to print out all the info you both provided and my husband will work it tomorrow evening when he gets home from work. We greatly appreciate it. So glad I found your site.
I will let you know how it turns out. I am hoping this all does the trick, it has been a problem for months, thought we had it under control till tonight.

    Thanks and goodnight!
    Sandy :)

    Here's an idea for you:

If you feel totally safe about this, and I mean totally, why not engage in the old fashioned method of conflict resolution known as talking?

Go and speak to your neighbours, ask them to keep off the wireless. It may be their kids playing around and they have no idea about it.

    Hi Collinsl

    Thanks for your input!
These people do not have kids. These people maybe 30 or so. We have different problems with them. We even finally had to put up camera's and etc. around our home because of them. Plus we think they are peeping toms on top of that. Just got to catch them in the act. So no, I am trying to get this internet issue resolved and keep them locked out completely. I have Roko for my internet music and caught her name on it a few months ago. So we added a password and I have not seem them on it since. These people have been a problem since they moved next door. I was thankful when I found you all last night. I am trying to keep peace before a war breaks out. Know what I mean !
My husband is ready to completely explode.

We are going to try what andrew444 and JustAnotherDude suggested us to do and I am hoping this works.

    Thanks again!
