    Hello,
I got some virus on my desktop that crashed MS XP. At the time I had Malwarebytes, Avast, Threatfire and Comodo. Unfortunately Comodo was in learn mode because I was installing some software at the time. While I was waiting I was on Facebook and IM. Boom! somthing got in. As I watched in horror things started to act funny on my computer. I noticed I couldn't open a particular file. Then another... I ran ccleaner and checked my registry settings. There were 800 some errors and counting.

To make a long story short I s*** canned the whole thing. I had a new internal hard drive sitting around so I swapped drives and installed a clean copy of XP pro. Turned on all of the protection this time and switched from Threatfire to AntiVir.

The problem is that both my hard drive and my back up drive seem to have been affected by the virus. With the new XP pro system I cannot see any of the files. When I check properties I see that the correct gb of files is there but I can't access or see them. This morning I brought the external drive to work and hooked it up to a vista machine. I can see the files but cannot access them. I tried all of the normal stuff. Take ownership of the files, etc.. When I try to open them it says I do not have the authority to open them. I am at the admin level on this machine so that is not the problem.

Any idea on how I can get at my precious documents and files. Failure is not an option.

    Thanks
    Rick

hi there sorry to hear about this :s

I'm a bit confused, you say both HDD's seem to have been affected does this include the one with fresh copy? Do you have both internal HDD's connected? Was the backup drive connected at the time of failure? This should make it more clearer for us :p
Meanwhile try doing a system restore, go to start>all programs>accesories>system tools>system restore

Thanks for the reply. To answer your question...
Drive #1-internal C drive that was used at time of infection. Held OS and all my files. Was not partitioned. (25gb of files and pics, 125gb of music)
Drive #2 - external drive that held a backup of C drive (created daily by a program called Bounceback)
Drive #3 - blank internal hard drive. Not installed at time of infection.

infection event - #1 & #2 were in use. Tried Malware removal and system restore. Nothing seemed to work. I still have #1 & #2 in their infection state. I can re-install them and try some more malware removal procedures. I turned them off in the hope that I would halt their damage and be able to restore them at some point.

Now - I have this fresh drive #3 with a clean copy of Xp. etc. I am now using it as the C drive. The #1 #2 drives are connected as D and external respectively. There seems to be no evidence of the virus remaining (I've run your normal malware removal procedures (system restore did not work). My only problem right now is that I cannot get at the blasted files. They seem to be hidden, protected or damaged somehow.

    Thanks
    Rick
