I want to block advertising in web pages while I browse to different sites. I control popups with AdAware and browser settings, which seem to work just fine. I mostly use IE 6.0 for general browsing and Mozilla from time to time. I live in the boondocks and had to resort to satellite. So my Internet connection is rather slow and would like to minimize load times by blocking unnecessary content. My OS is Windows XP. Most stuff I found for free is only for Popups.

I currently use a shareware program called "Ad Muncher" which I believe it's currently the most effective as well as simple-to-use ad and pop-up blocker - at least of those that I've ever tried before. This program is simply outstanding at blocking all kinds of advertising as it blocks most banner, Flash, floating, and text ads. It is also very configurable with an extensive advertising filter list available which is frequently updated.

Ad Muncher removes not only adverts but also popups, and general browsing annoyances while using all popular browsers and Web-utilizing programs. Another useful thing about this program is that it also removes banners displaying and popup generating programs like ICQ, Morpheus, Kazaa, Grokster, iMesh, BearShare, LimeWire, etc.

I think the program cost me around $25-$30 US dollars when I originally bought it; but it was most definitely one of the best investments that I ever made as it makes browsing the web basically "add-free." Additionally, using this program speeds up "webpage loading" considerably, thanks to the now missing ads and pop up windows. The program authors also sponsor a terrific forum on the official website (Ad Muncher Chat Forum)

Side Note: I used to use the freeware program called "Adblock Plus" which is also a software program that will block many ads and banners but it doesn't hold a candle to AdMuncher and it only works on the Firefox browser. It is actually a content filtering plug-in (add-on) for the Mozilla Firefox browser which allows the user to specify filters, which remove unwanted content based on the source-address.

Adblock Plus users can subscribe to pre-set filters, customize filters or create your own filters however manually adding ads and banners can take some amount of effort, at least initially. You also have the option of hiding or completely blocking ads so you can save bandwidth. Every time a webpage loads, it will intercept and disable the elements matching your filters.

    Good Luck!

Thanks for the informative reply. I will look for a trail version and purchase if I like. I'll come back and post the results.

You won't be disappointed! I bought it three times for four computers. (One version I bought early enough that I could install it on a desktop and a notebook). I've asked the developer to please consider working on a version for linux.

If you use Firefox your best option would be to download the free plugin Ad-block plus. :)
