Hi, I just completed a mb, cpu ,and ram upgrade and had to run windows xp setup and do a repair. everything seemed to go ok but I was troubled that with one minute remaining as it was removing temporary files it rebooted and I found myself at the beginning of the setup and repair proceedure because it booted from the xp cd. I hit the reset button and changed the boot sequence to hdd and the computer booted into xp ok and asked for the name of the person using it and then said finished. It now booted up and I got a message saying that I had to reactivate xp which I know is ok and then a messsage came up saying I had to reactivate AVG antivirus also. Before I could do anything the screen went black and the blue screen came up with an error message and was dumping memory. the message said there was a problem with the file NTGLM7X.sys. It does this every time and I can't do anything with it because it crashes. the new motherboard is an msi K9N6SGM-v with amd 4000+ cpu and 1 gig ram. the primary master hdd was also used on an msi board that supported an xp1700+ cpu. does anyone have any idea what goes on here? thanks

The minute I saw your post title I thought "I'll bet it's an MSI board with an NVidia chipset" and it is indeed an MSI board, and I Googled the model, and sure enough, it's got an NVidia chipset. I've seen this error before. If you can boot in safe mode, do so and uninstall your chipset drivers, and any MSI utilities like MSI's Core Center. Then reboot in normal mode and reload the chipset software. You don't really need the Core Center software, but you can try to reload it if you use it.... I hope this helps ;)

thanks for the replies. I'm helping a friend upgrade his computer and we thought it would be easy. Now it is turning into a nightmare. Yep, it's an MSI board K9N6SGM-V with an nvidia 6100 chipset. I have googled around and got a few hits on MSI's pc alert program that uses that file ntglm7x.sys. the primary master disk with the xp operating system on it was being used on an older msi motherboard with pc alert installed. I've used this computer before and when it booted up pc alert had to load showing the fan speeds and temps so I'm wondering if the pcalert that is loaded on startup for the old XP1700+ motherboard is having some sort of conflict reading the new motherboard. Maybe I can boot into safe mode and locate that problem file and rename it something like ntglm7x.old and see if xp will boot up and stabilize so I can finish the upgrade. I still need to install the latest drivers for it and check the lan connection but it keeps crashing. My friend is getting bummed over this problem. will post back if that fixes it.:confused

Good idea... better yet, boot in safe mode and go to Add/Remove Programs and try to uninstall the PC Alert program. If it won't uninstall in safe mode, run msconfig and remove it from the start up list in addition to renaming the file... you're definitely on the right track when you say it was installed with the old hardware and now causing a problem with the new hardware. The PC Alert program used on board sensors and chips to show fan speeds and system temperatures, and the new motherboard has totally different hardware, different chips, and different sensors, and when PC Alert tries to find the old chips and read them, the system crashes. Getting rid of PC Alert entirely is your best bet here. Even if you have to rename the entire PC Alert folder in safe mode, all you'll get at worst is a "file not found" error which shouldn't be a big deal. But if you remove the program from the msconfig start up list, it shouldn't even try to run in the first place.

Thanks for your help dlb . removing it entirely sounds like the best way to go. you definitely put me on the right track. Hopefully he'll be up and running and be a happy camper again. can I get rid of it by running hijack this and if it is there uncheck it? thanks

:DYippee, that was the problem. Booted into safe mode and removed that old version of pc alert and it booted right up. there were a few minor issues that need to be resolved after the upgrade and xp repair. After all those attempted boots and crashes I exceeded my xp activation tries and had to call on the telephone but it went smoothly and no problem. also had a problem with automatic update and had to use the cmd box to register a missing file and that went smoothly. I also had to remove avg free and download it again and install it and that went smoothly. My friend is now a happy camper. Thanks for all the help.:)

    Glad that I could help!
Microsoft changed the telephone activation procedure about 6 or 8 months ago, and it's now totally automated and relatively painless. Anyway, I'm glad that everyone is now camping happily ;)
