I replaced my motherboard with a brand new Asus A7N8X-E Deluxe mobo and a brand new 550W Power supply. I hooked up all drives, video card, memory, etc and when I start the computer it goes through POST and right when windows XP looks like it's about to load a blue screen error pops up then reboots the machine. The problem is that the blue screen error only shows up for, at the very most, 1 second. I have no idea what the blue screen error says and I have no idea what could be wrong. Can anyone help me please? Here are the specs for my pc:

    Mobo: Asus A7N8X-E Deluxe
    CPU: AMD Athlon XP 3000+
Memory: 512 MB PC 2700 (may be PC 2100 can't remember for sure)
    Video: GeForce 4 TI 4400
    Hard Drive: Western Digital 1200JB

Temperature is normal. FSB is 166mhz multiplied by 13. If you need more info just let me know. I don't know what else to do. Any help would be greatly appreciated

If you had a working system with a bootable OS, and you replaced the motherboard with something different than what you had, this probably explains what it happening.

I don't any way of fixing it other than reinstalling the OS, but perhaps someone else might know of a way.

My system worked perfect with the other motherboard. I had no errors, no problems booting up, etc. This just started happening immediately after installing this new mobo.

The other motherboard was? Was it the same chipset? I've had a similar problem in the past where the MB drivers weren't the same, so it wouldn't recognize the HDD & would hang at the POST screen.

It's a different chipset. The old chipset I believe was made by VIA and this chipset I have now is nVidia nForce 2. MY system gets through POST then gets to the windows logo screen, then blue screen error pops up and reboots. I've tried moving the memory module to different memory banks on the mobo and that doesn't change anything. I've also reduced the FSB from 166mhz to 100mhz just to try to get it to load at a slower CPU speed and same error still pops up. I know my hard drive is fine so I don't plan to format but I have no idea what else it could be. I've never encountered this problem.

Yes I tried safemode with and without networking. Do you guys know if I can print the screen in command prompt because maybe I can catch an image of that blue screen and look it up. Otherwise, I may just videotape my monitor and play it back and pause on the blue screen. If you have any other options for me please let me know. THank you very much

I just removed the hard drive and replaced it with a hard drive from another PC that has Windows 98 on it and it booted up fine. Now I know for sure the PC is hooked up correctly, so my question is, do you think it has something to do with windows xp? At first I thought it could be a copyright issue where windows xp is detecting different hardware on the PC indicating that it may have been copied to another computer then rendering the OS useless, but I realized that this hard drive came from a Soyo mobo before being transferred to a Gigabyte mobo and now being transferred to the Asus A7n8x. It worked fine on the Gigabyte and the Soyo and was not reformatted between the mobo exchanges. What do you guys think? I need help bad, I have no idea of what else I should do. Please let me know if you have any info, and thank you to those who have responded already.

You need to reinstall the OS!
When making major hardware change such as MOBO replacement, simply reinstall the OS.

Asus is right on, it is rare you can change a mobo and not reinstall the os especially with xp. Even if it works at first you can get problems later.

The question is, how many more people must mention doing a reinstall/repair/in place upgrade before it gets tried? ;)

I hooked up my hardrive and booted to my OS cd to begin the reinstall process and about 5 min later the computer just turned off. I tried to boot to cd again and the same thing happened. It turns off hard drive and cpu and fans but the LED on the front of the case remained on. I have to hold down power button to actually get the LED to turn off. I think I'm going to just return my mobo to newegg.com and just go with a P4 system. My Athlon XP 3000+ CPU was purchased at Fry's and it was not a boxed CPU. I think the CPU may have something wrong with it. I don't know.

If the computer will post it probably ain't the cpu or mobo. Test the ram with memtest86 let run for at least 3 passes for a quick check, better if run 8 hours or so. Are you sure the cpu is not overheating? Check that the hs is mounted correctly, What are your temps in bios after the computer has been on for 15 minutes?

Exactly what ram do you have?
